The state of our society depends directly on the conditions of our family lives. Embodiments of good manners and epitomes of noble character keep rising on the horizon of the society – only and only if the familial life is well and good. The way the parents raise their children, those children grow up with those characteristics. The way the husband and wife treat and respect each other in their private lives, the same characteristics will be created in their children as well.
To make the familial life delightful and to raise children properly, it is necessary for the husband and wife to know their respective rights and duties and fulfill them. The way the man plays an important part in familial life, in the same way the role of the woman is also pivotal. One among the responsibilities of the wife is to serve and comfort the husband.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) described the rights of the women and at the same time described their responsibilities as well. He taught them that apart from the Obligatory acts of worship, serving the husband and pleasing him is the foremost responsibility of the wife. A wife should always try to keep her husband. However, if the wishes of the husband go against the commands of Almighty Allah and His Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). If the husband orders her to do anything of the sort, the wife should explain to the husband the ill-effects of going against the command of Allah Most High.
There is a Hadith in Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani:
Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin Salaam (May Allah be well pleased with him): The best woman is the one who, when you see her, gladdens you, when you give an order, obeys you and guards your wealth and her own self in your absence. (Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 152)
Comforting the husband is the provision of the hereafter
These times have fallen prey to superficial fashions. Men and women are abandoning Islamic teachings and are falling prey to western norms. Even the mutual relations between husband and wife are being viewed at in that light. Serving the husband is being considered demeaning. Loving and comforting the husband is being dismissed as old-fashioned. In these materialistic times, our sisters should remember that we are Muslims and are bound to the word and command of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).
If we realize what our Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has said regarding this, our hearts will be filled with joy and the phantasms of fashion will definitely break down. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has said:
Translation: If the woman dies in such a state that her husband is pleased with her, she will enter paradise. (Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 19327)
