Shariah rules about menses

Shariah rules about menses

Allah Most High says in the Holy Quran:

O Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)!  They ask You about menses.  You tell them that it is an uncleanliness.  Thus, you should stay away from the women in their menses.  Surah Baqarah (2:222)

The maximal duration of the menstrual period

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Umama (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  For (both) a virgin and a married woman, the minimal duration of the menstrual period is 3 days and the maximal duration is 10 days.  If menstrual period exceeds 10 days, the lady is a Mustahaadha (i.e. she suffers from chronic vaginal discharge).  This is related by Daraqutni

Definition of Mustahaaza

Mustahaaza is the lady who has vaginal discharge even when she is not having menses or postpartum bleeding.  There is a certain blood vessel in the womb, which when ruptured, creates this condition.  Thus, when a woman is suffering from chronic vaginal discharge, she should continue offering Salaat, fasting and other worship.  Intercourse also is not prohibited when suffering from this condition.  (Mirqaat, 12)

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  The duration of a menstrual period is (either) 3 days or 4 days or 5 days or 6 days or 7 days or 8 days or 9 days or 10 days.  When it exceeds 10 days, the lady will be considered a Mustahaaza (i.e. one suffering from chronic vaginal discharge).

This is related by Ibn ‘Adi.

Daraqutni has related a similar Mauquf Hadith on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (May Allah be well pleased with him).

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Wathila bin Al Asqa’ (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  The minimal duration of a menstrual period is 3 days and the maximal duration is 10 days.  This is related by Daraqutni.

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Mua’adh bin Jabal (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  The duration of a menstrual period is not less than 3 days and a duration of more than 10 days is considered to be a menstrual period.  This is related by Ibn ‘Adi.
