How Hadhrat Umm Maabad and her husband embraced Islam

It is given in Seerat Un Nabawiyya and in Shams Ut Tawareekh, etc. that in the emigration the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) passed by the tent of Umme Ma’abad A’atika bint Khalid.  She was an intelligent old woman.  She would host whoever passed by her tent.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent for Khurma and meat.  She sighed and said:  Alas!  There is such a severe famine in these parts that we don’t get anything to eat for days together.  I am unable to serve you.  Please excuse me.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also pitied her.  He looked around and saw a goat.  He asked her about that goat.  She said:  The goat is mine but because of weakness and hunger, she is with us but for a few moments.  She can’t even move now.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Just tell me.  Does it give any milk? Umm Ma’abad said:  When she is so weak how can she give any milk?  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  If you permit, can I milk her?  She said:  With pleasure.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent for that goat and passed His hands over its udders.  Then He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said a prayer.  Immediately the udders of the goat became full of milk.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent for vessels and milked it with His own hands.  First, He fed the people in the tent, then those who were accompanying Him and then He Himself drank from it.  In that weakened condition, the goat gave so much milk that all those were present had second helpings.  All the vessels of Umm Ma’abad were filled with milk.  Then the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) departed from there.

After some time, the husband of Umm Ma’abad returned home.  He was surprised when he saw that all the vessels of the house were full of milk.  He asked his wife:  There was no milch animal in the house.  Where did this milk come from?  Umm Ma’abad said:  A very blessed person had come.  It were the blessings of His hand that this near-death goat gave this much milk.  His speech was sweet, His face endearing, His language eloquent and full of grace.  Her husband said:  By Allah!  That man is from the Quraish.  They are searching for Him.  His fame is spreading to all parts of the world.  If I were present then, I would have never left His side.  Now my desire is to join Him.

Thus, both husband and wife reached Madina and embraced Islam.
