In which sports are competitions permitted?

In which sports are competitions permitted?

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Aisha Siddiqua (May Allah be well pleased with her):  I was traveling with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  As an amusement, I and the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) ran a race.  The mother of the believers says:  I overtook the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) while running.

(On another occasion) When I had gained weight, I ran another race with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  This time, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) overtook me.  The Prophet remarked to me:  This is for that race (in which you had overtaken Me).  This is related by Abu Dawood.

In which games are competitions are permitted?

In the light of the aforementioned Hadith, ‘Allama Qazi Khan has written that competing is permitted in 4 things:

1.  Camel race.

2.  Horse race.

3.  Shooting (bow and arrow).

4.  Running race.

A one-sided bet is permissible.  Thus, it is permissible if someone says:  If I defeat you, I will get this and if you defeat me, you will not get anything.  If the bet is two-sided, it is forbidden as it is gambling.

However if they include a 3rd person and decide:  If you defeat me, you will get this and if I defeat you, I will get this.  If the third person defeats us, he will not get anything; then this is permissible and the reward is permissible.

Competitions of the aforementioned are permissible as their permissibility is mentioned in the Hadith and Traditions.  (This is excerpted from Mirqaat)
