The women in the life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) -(3rd Part)

The women in the life of the Holy Prophet

(Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) -(3rd Part)

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was the one who granted women their due rights.  Here, we present a series on the women in the life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

The first part of this article ran here and the second here.  This is the third part.

Hadhrat Hafsa (May Allah be well pleased with her)

Her name is Hafsa.  She is from the clan of ‘Adi.  Her father is Hadhrat ‘Umar and her mother is Zainab bint Madh’oon (May Allah be well pleased with them both).  Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) is her blood brother.

She was born 5 years before the declaration of Prophethood.  She was first married to Hadhrat Khunais bin Hudhafa (May Allah be well pleased with him).  He had embraced Islam in the early days and along with him, Hadhrat Hafsa (May Allah be well pleased with her) had also embraced Islam.  They had emigrated to Abyssinia as well.  They returned some time before the Prophet’s emigration to Madina.

Hadhrat Khunais (May Allah be well pleased with him) was gravely injured in the Battle of Uhud.  He was carried to Madina, but he passed away in spite of treatment.

Disappointed, Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) came to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) told Him all that had happened.

Hafidh Ibn ‘Abdul Barr (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) has related a Hadith in Al Isti’yaab that once Jibreel (May peace be upon him) praised Hadhrat Hafsa (May Allah be well pleased with him) before the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) with the words:  She engages in profuse worship and fasts a lot.  She will be Your wife in paradise as well.

She passed away in 45 Hijri in Madina.  The governor of Madina Marwan led her Funeral Salaat and also shouldered her bier for some distance.  Then Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) led the bier to her grave.  Her brother Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar and his sons buried her.

She did not bear the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) any children.

Sixty Hadith are related on her authority.  Six of them are in Sahih Muslim and the others are related in other compilations of Hadith.

Hadhrat Zainab bint Khuzaima (May Allah be well pleased with her)

Her name is Zainab (May Allah be well pleased with him).  She was famously known as Umm Al Masakeen.

She was earlier married to Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin Jahsh (May Allah be well pleased with him), who was the son of the Prophet’s paternal aunt.  He was martyred in the Battle of Uhud in 3 Hijri.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) married her the same year.  She was around 30 years old.  Her dower was 12 Oqiyah.  She passed away only 2, 3 months after this.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) Himself led her Funeral Salaat and buried her.

She was very famous for her generosity.  She took a lot of interest in feeding the hungry and the needful.  That’s why she became famous as Umm Al Masakeen.

Hadhrat Umm Salma (May Allah be well pleased with her)

Her name is Hind and her Kuniyah is Umm Salma.  Her father is Abi Mugheera and her mother is ‘Atika bint A’amir.

Hadhrat Umm Salma (May Allah be well pleased with her) was first married to her paternal cousin Hadhrat Abu Salama (May Allah be well pleased with him).  He embraced Islam in the early days.  Hadhrat Umm Salma (May Allah be well pleased with her) also embraced Islam alongside him.  As per some Traditions, they also emigrated to Abyssinia along with other Muslims.  Later on they emigrated to Madina as well.

In 3 Hijri, Hadhrat Abu Salama (May Allah be well pleased with him) was injured in the Battle of Uhud.  After some time, he passed away of that wound.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) had a lot of consideration for the difficulties which Hadhrat Umm Salma (May Allah be well pleased with her) and her husband faced.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent her the proposal for marriage through Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him).

She accepted it and became the wife of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in 4 Hijri.

She was with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in the Treaty of Hudaibiyah.

She passed away in 63 Hijri at the age of 84.  Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) led the Funeral Salaat.

She was very generous like her father.  She would never let anyone who came to her door go back empty handed.  Three hundred and seventy eight Hadith are related on her authority.
