A summary of the Shariah rulings for women suffering from menorrhagia

A summary of the Shariah rulings for women suffering from menorrhagia

[The first part of this article ran here, the second here and the third here.  This is the concluding part]

A lady who had regular menses before her menorrhagia:  For her, the ruling is that the days of her regular menses will be considered as regular menses and the other days with flow will be considered as menorrhagia.  Such a lady should take a full bath (Ghusl) when the days of her menses end.  After that, she should make a fresh ablution (Wuzu) for every Salaat.  Her ablution will be valid until the time of the next Salaat starts.  She can engage in all forms of worship until the time of the next Salaat starts (then she will have to make a fresh ablution).

A lady suffering from menorrhagia who is confused about the days and dates of her menses:  This lady should think very carefully about the days and dates of her menses.  Then, she should accept what seem to her to be the most probable days and dates of her menses.  (Then she should follow the previous Shariah ruling).

A lady suffering from menorrhagia who is totally confused about the days and dates of her menses:  Such a lady should err on the side of caution and caution is to take a bath for every Salaat.

A lady suffering from menorrhagia who has some doubts about her days of purity and menses:  If such a lady has doubts as to whether the days passing by are days of purity or her menses have started, she should make a fresh ablution for every Salaat.

If such a lady has doubts that the days passing by are her days of purity and her menses have ended, she should take a bath for every Salaat.

This is because a bath is necessary after menses.  As the lady is not sure of the termination of menses but has doubts about it, she should take a bath for every Salaat.

There is no problem if the couple has sexual relations when the wife is suffering from menorrhagia

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas (May Allah be well pleased with them), he says that if the husband of the lady who is suffering from menorrhagia has sex with her, there is no problem in it.  This has been related by ‘Abdur Razzaq.

It is mentioned in a Hadith of Abu Dawood and in a Hadith related by Baihaqui, which is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Akrama (May Allah be well pleased with him) and he narrates on the authority of Hadhrat Humna bint Jahsh (May Allah be well pleased with her) that she suffered from menorrhagia and her husband would establish sexual relations with her.

Abu Dawood has held his peace about the chain of narration of this authority which is a proof of their authenticity.  Imam Nawawi (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) has also clarified that the chain of narration of this Hadith are rigorously authenticated.

Concluded.
