Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) is the creator of the whole universe. All the stars, planets, celestial bodies and the whole system of the universe depends on the eternal power of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). Each celestial body moves in its own body. Not even one strays a bit from its orbit and enters another's orbit, leave alone one celestial body colliding with another. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) says:

And the Sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing. (38) And the Moon― We have measured for it mansions (to traverse) till it returns like the old (and withered) lower part of date-stalk. (39) It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law). Surah Yaseen (36:40)

Solar eclipse reveals the perfection of nature.

As the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: The sun and the moon are 2 among the signs of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). One reason why these eclipses occur is to show human beings, who take pride in studying each and every cell of the body and each and every place on the earth, that the Lord who put them one before the another, will one day take away the light of these bright heavenly bodies. These mountains which are an example of standing firm will become insignificant dust.

Another reason is that Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) warns His worshippers through these eclipses.

We only send the Signs by way of terror (and warning from evil). Surah Isra –(17:59)

These incidents are a kind of natural warning that those who are busy in the love of this world and are heedless and careless about religion should try to develop the love and fear of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). They should try to lead their lives as per the rules and the system given by Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala); that they should return towards obedience of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala).

We find many Hadith about this. There is a Hadith in Musnad Imam Ahmed and Majma Uz Zawaaid, Vol. 2 Pg. No: 445:

Translation: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Mahmood bin Labid Ansari (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the day the son of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) Hadhrat Ibrahim (May Allah be well pleased with him) passed away into the presence of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala), the sun went into eclipse. People said that the sun was in eclipse as the son of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) passed away. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Verily! The sun and the moon are 2 among the signs of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). Listen! The truth is that they do not go into eclipse because of the life or death of somebody. When you see them lightless, turn towards the Masjid. Then the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) stood up to offer Salaat. He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) recited a portion of Surah Zurriyaat, then performed the Ruku, then stood up and performed 2 Sajdah and then again stood up and performed the 2nd raka'at like the first.

(Majma Uz Zawaaid, Vol. 2, Kitab Us Salaat, Pg. No: 445; Musnad Imam Ahmed, Musnad Ul Ansaar raziallahuanhum, Hadith No: 22522)

That this universe is running without any problem is a great sign of the power of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). The changing of the day into the night and the motion of the heavenly bodies is an even greater sign. Intelligent people do think about and reflect on it, but as the whole system keeps running in the same manner, their minds do not reach the great sign hidden in this system, so Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) "breaks" this system sometimes and displays His perfect power in such a way that each and every person stops with surprise and bewilderment.

Solar and lunar eclipses are also among these "breaks" of the system of the universe. They reveal the power of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) that the whole universe is running without any flaws and within a moment, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) can turn the whole system upside down. He has all the power to destroy this universe in the fraction of a second.

At the time of solar eclipse, we should busy ourselves in Tauba and asking for forgiveness for our sins.

Translation: it has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Moosa 'Ash'ari (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: These eclipses of sun and the moon are the signs of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) reveals them. They do not happen because of the life and death of someone. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) invites His people to His fear with them. When you see any of these signs, then turn towards the Dhikr (remembrance) of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala), remember Him, pray to Him and ask for forgiveness of your sins.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 999)

By Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi Qadri, Naib Shaykh Ul Fiqh, Jamia Nizamia and Founder/Director Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center.
