Disapproval of Interest in the Holy Quran and the Hadith

Interest ( Sud ) is strictly forbidden in Islam. The Holy Quran has not condemned any other sin as this. There are warnings for different kinds of sins like drinking wine, having pork, adultery etc. but for none is the warning and disapproval as strict as for interest. It has given in the Holy Quran:

O ye who believe! fear Allah and give up what remains of your demand for usury, if ye are indeed believers. (278) If ye do it not, take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger: but if ye repent ye shall have your capital sums; deal not unjustly and ye shall not be dealt with unjustly. Surah Baqarah (2:279, 278)

Those who devour usury will not stand except as stands one whom the Evil One by his touch hath driven to madness. That is because they say: "Trade is like usury, but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (the offence) are companions of the Fire: they will abide therein (for ever). Surah Baqarah (2:275)

At another place, it is mentioned:

O ye who believe! Devour not usury, doubled and multiplied; but fear Allah; that ye may (really) prosper. Surah AL Imran (3:130)

There are many Hadith which disapprove of and condemn interest. As an illustration, only some are being mentioned here:

It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah SWT be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has cursed those who consume interest, those who give interest, those who write down these transactions and those who give witness to it. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No: 2955, Sunan Ibn Majah 2268)

There is a Hadith in Musnad Ahmed bin Hambal, Sunan Dar Qutni, MIskaatul Masabeeh and Zujajatul Masabeeh:

It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abdullah bin Hanzlah (May Allah SWT be well pleased with them), he said that: Consuming 1 Dirham of interest deliberately is worse than committing adultery 36 times. (Musnad Ahmed, Hadith No: 20951) and in Imam Baihaqi’s Shu’abul Iman, the following words are added: The flesh which is nourished with forbidden food is more suitable for the fire of Hell. (Shu’abul Iman Hadith No: 5277)

There is another Hadith in Mishkaatul Masabeeh:

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: There are 70 grades of Interest and the least one among them is like committing adultery with one’s mother. (Mishkatul Masabeeh, Pg No: 246)

Every person should keep in mind the aforementioned verses of the Holy Quran and the Hadith and should neither consume interest nor participate in it in any manner.
