Ill-Effects of jealousy

Hadhrat Muhaddith-E-Deccan (May Allah Ta’ala shower His mercy on him) writes about the ill-effects of jealousy:   The basic truth about jealousy is that the jealous person desires the harm of the other person and this person does not suffer any harm and the jealous person him/herself suffers harm and destroys his/her Deen.  The worship of the jealous person, which will be the Noor in the hereafter, will be transferred to the record of deeds of the person of whom he/she is jealous by the angels.   Jealousy is a very bad trait and we should save ourselves from this.  In the same way, thinking ill of others, anger, enmity and malice are also bad traits of the Self (Nafs) and refraining them is very necessary.  We should keep our heart free from all this garbage.   Hadhrat Bakr Bin Abdullah (May Allah Ta’ala shower His mercy on him) says:   There was a person who would stand before the king every day and tell: You do good with those who are good, leave the bad to themselves, as for them their own character is enough.  The king would like that person.  A certain person became jealous of this person and told the king that this person tells that your mouth stinks.  The king asked him for the proof and he said that when you call that person closer, he will cover his nose, so that he does not have to bear the bad odor of your mouth.    After saying this, this person left and took the person who would advise the king, "You do good ….." to his house and gave him some chutney, in which a lot of garlic had been added.   When this person came to the king, the king called that person closer and this person covered his mouth with a handkerchief, so that the king should not get the odor of garlic from his mouth.  The king took this for a sign that the person who had complained was correct.   This king had a habit that whenever he would award anyone something, he would write the order with own hands.  At this time, the king wrote an order to the governor that the bearer of this letter should be killed.  When this person (unknowingly) took this order and left the palace, the jealous person took this to be a reward and made this person give it to him.  The jealous person took this order to the governor and was promptly killed.   As before, this pious person went to the king and started saying what he used to.  The king looked at him with astonishment and asked him about the letter.  He said what had happened.  The king said that that person said that you tell other that I have bad breath.  This person refused.  The king asked him about covering his mouth/nose with a handkerchief.  He told the king about the garlic chutney.  The king said, you always tell that the character of the bad people is enough for them, really his character was enough to punish him.   Translation of Hadith: The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: There are 3 characteristics, which are the base for all sins:   1.  Pride.   2.  Greed.   3.  Jealousy.   (Jame Ul Ahadith, Hadith No. 40334)   Jealousy also decreases the age of a person.  Somebody asked a Bedouin as to how he lived up to such a ripe old age.  He replied: I abandoned jealousy and got this age.   When Allah Ta’ala wants to impose such an enemy on someone, who is never merciful, then He puts jealousy in that person.   Hadhrat Shaykh Raslan Dimashqi says: Jealousy is the key for every harmful thing.  Very many difficulties and tribulations come into being because of this and the jealous person is bereft of the success of this world and the next.  Those who desire the closeness of Allah Ta’ala should stay miles away from this evil habit and should guard their hearts thus, "The truth is that the bounties given to the person (of whom one feels jealous) are given by the Allah Ta’ala.   Hadhrat Muhammad Bin Sireen (May Allah Ta’ala shower His mercy on him) says: I never felt jealous of anyone in matters of this world, because if that person is to enter Jannah, that person will get Jannah and the bounties of this world are nothing and if that person is to dwell in hell, that person will enter hell, how will my jealousy affect him?   In the same way, thinking ill of anyone, being unreasonably angry, malignant, having enmity are bad traits.  The hearts of those who desire the closeness of Allah Ta’ala should be free from all of them.  Remembrance of Allah Ta’ala will have its effect only when the heart is free of all these garbage.   From Mawaaiz-E-Hasana of Hadhrat Muhaddith-E-Deccan Abul Hasanaat Syed Abdullah Shah Sahab Naqshbandi Mujaddidi Qadri (May Allah Ta’ala shower His mercy on him), Vol. 2, Pg.
