Patience-2

Hadhrat Abu Hamid (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) says: The patient person is the one who has Sabr and not the one who exercises patience and complains before people.

Hadith: The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) says: When Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) holds somebody as a friend, He puts him in such a difficulty for which there is no cure. If that person exercises patience, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) selects that person and if that person is pleased with the will of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), then Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) raises the status of that person.

The wife of Hadhrat Fatah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) slipped and broke her hand. She let out a laugh. People asked her: You got hurt so badly. Don’t you feel any pain? She said: I have been told the reward (of patience on this difficulty) and that has driven the pain from my heart. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) says: When I put someone in a disease and that person exercises patience and does not let any complain come on his (or her) lips, then I give reward for it……….If I make that person healthy, I forgive all the sins and if I give that person death, then I cleanse that person (of sins) and take that person in My Mercy.

The patience of habit is that if somebody tells something offensive to you, then you should not avenge yourself and should not scold that person. The patience of worship ( ‘Ibadah ) is that even though, you don’t feel the pleasure while praying, still you should go on praying.

We should not lose control in adversities. Some people lose control when faced with difficulties and start cursing the people in power. This is also a sign of impatience. The Hadith prohibit this. It is said: Do not criticize the rulers, their hearts are held by Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). You obey Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), He will make the hearts of the rulers soft. Whatever happens in this world is an expression of the design and will of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), so we should be patient and thankful in every situation.

In adversities and difficulties, love progresses and the bond with Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) grows stronger. In these times, the heart turns away from the creation and becomes aloof from this world. The person is adversity turns towards Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) with the whole being. No other hope excepting Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) remains. The truth about this world becomes clear to that person. Not becoming restless and losing control in difficulty and not missing any good deeds is the perfect patience ( Sabr Jameel ).

Incident: Once Hadhrat Ghouse Bahauddin Zakariyya (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) was addressing people. In the course of the lecture, somebody told that him that his ship which had goods worth millions is stuck in a storm. He heard this painful news, lowered his head for a moment and said: Alhamdulillah! (All praise is for Allah) and continued the address. His blessed face did not show any sign of sorrow or regret. After some days, he was again addressing people, when somebody came and informed him that his ship was safe and had suffered no damage. Like before, he lowered his head, raised it and said: Alhamdulillah! and again continued the address. His blessed face or manner did not show any sign of happiness or joy. After the address ended, his disciples asked him: On receiving a news of sorrow, you thanked Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and on receiving a news of happiness, you again thanked Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). Please explain this to us.

He said: On receiving both the news, I looked at my heart and on both occasions, I found that it was in communion with Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). Sorrow, pain or happiness and joy did not make any difference in the remembrance of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), that is why I said: Alhamdulillah!

Difficulties are of 2 kinds: Physical and mental. Like a surgery might be physically painful, but not mentally. Even the Prophets (Peace be upon all of them) suffered physical sorrow, like what the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) faced on passing away of His son. But not having any mental sorrow is Sabr Jameel.

Difficulties do affect the physical body of the lovers of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), but does not affect their heart. Even they face any physical difficulty, their heart remains at peace. Even in sorrow, they still remain happy. The way the lover feels pain in the grip of the beloved, but the heart remains pleased and happy. Though the body faces pain, but the soul feels at peace.
