Rules about Friday Salaat

There are 12 Raka'at in Salaat Ul Zuhr, 4 Sunnah, 4 Fardh, 2 Sunnah and 2 Nafl.  On Friday, instead of Salaat Ul Zuhr, Salaat Ul Juma is there.  In Friday Salaat, there are 14 Raka'at in Salaat Ul Juma, 4 Sunnah, 2 Fardh, 4 Sunnah, 2 Sunnah, 2 Nafl.

Friday Salaat is Fardh.  We should make the intention of offering Fardh Salaat.  Niyyah (intention) need not be said out.  The resolve of our heart means Niyyah.  Even if we make a resolve, it is enough.

Offering Salaat during Khutba:

When the Khateeb (sermonizer) stands up with the intention of ascending the pulpit and giving the Khutba (sermon), from then on Dhikr, Tasbeeh (remembering and praising Allah Ta'ala) and offering Sunnah and Nafl Salaat is also prohibited.  However, a "Sahab-e-Tarteeb" (i.e. who always offers Salaat punctually) may offer the Qaza of a Salaat.

If someone is reciting the Holy Quran, or doing Dhikr, etc., then that person should stop doing so.  If someone is offering Salaat, that person should finish the Salaat soon and pay attention to the Imam and listen to the sermon (Khutba) attentively.  There is a Hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah, Pg. No. 79:

Translation of Hadith: Hadhrat Adi Bin Thabit (May Allah be well pleased with him) narrates on the authority of his father that when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would grace the pulpit, then His companions (Sahabah) would turn their faces towards Him.  (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 1126)

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:

Translation of Hadith: When the Imam starts for the pulpit for the sermon, then there is neither Salaat nor talk.  (Bada’i, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 595)

It is given in Bada’i, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 592:

Translation:  Talk is Makruh (undesirable) in a sermon, similarly reciting the Holy Quran and similarly Salaat.

If there is no time to offer Sunnah Salaat before the sermon, then offer it along with the other Sunnah that are offered after the Fardh Salaat.

Reciting Durud during the Khutba:

The Fuqaha have clarified about Durud during a sermon (khutba) that it should be recited softly, in a low voice, as reciting Durud does not distract one from the Khtuba itself.  This gives us 2 virtues, one of listening to the Khutba and of reciting the Durud.  This is the ruling for the sermon of marriage also.  As given in Haashiya At Tahawi ‘Ala Miraqil Falah, Kitab Us Salaat.
