A Hadith is narrated in Khasaais-e-Kubra on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent an army to fight the infidels in which Hadhrat Abu Bakr (May Allah be well pleased with him) was also present and told them: Go with great speed, as the source of water is between you and the disbelievers. If they reach it first, you will be put to great difficulty and will be left thirsty. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) remained behind with 8 persons. He asked them: Do you want to rest a bit and then join the others? They said: It would be better. Thus, they slept. When the heat from the sun awakened them, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) told them to gather after their toilettes. When they came, He asked: Does any one of you have any water? They said: There is some water in a pail. He ordered them to bring it to Him. When it was presented to Him, He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) passed His blessed hand over it and blessed that water. Then He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) ordered them to perform Wudhu and He Himself poured water for everyone. When each one of them did their Wudhu, He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) led them in Salaat and said: Guard that pail, as very soon there will be a greatness for it.
Then the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) rode His mount to the army. He conversed with His companions: What do you think they have done? They said: Allah and His Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) know best. He said: Abu Bakr and ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) are among them. They will keep them on the right path. However, the disbelievers have taken lead and reached the water first and they are in great difficulty. They and their animals are suffering from acute thirst.
When the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) reached there, He sent for that pail which had a small quantity of water and announced that everyone should come and drink water. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) began granting water to everyone to the point that everyone’s thirst was sated. Then water was given to the animals and whatever vessels, waterskins, etc. were these for storage of water, all of them were filled.
Then the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and the Companions turned to the disbelievers. At that moment, such a strong wind blew on them that they turned on their heels and ran. Thus, many were killed and many were captured and much booty was captured. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) returned safe and sound.
A whole army’s thirst being quenched with a small amount of water is not possible without the power of Allah. The same power was expressed through the sacred hands of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).
A Hadith is related in Khasaais-e-Kubra on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) that in a journey, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) asked me: Do you have anything with you? I replied: There are some dates in my lunchbox. He said: Bring them. I did so. There were a total of 21 dates. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) passed His blessed hand over it and recited some prayer. Then He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) asked me to call 10 persons. I called them and they came. They ate to their heart’s content and went away. Then again I received the order to call 10 more persons. They also had their fill. In the same way groups of 10 persons were called and they would eat to their heart’s content and leave. So much so that the whole army was fed with just a few dates and some were left.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: You keep this box. Whenever you feel any hand, just put your hand inside and take out some dates. Just take care that you don’t pour them out and scatter them.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) says: In the time of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), I ate only those dates. After that, in the ears of Hadhrat Abu Bakr, Hadhrat ‘Umar, Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with them) also, I spent from those dates. By estimate, I spend 50 Wasaq from it in the path of Allah and more than 200 Wasaq, I have eaten and served to others. When Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) was martyred, then those dates were finished.
It is given in Muntaha Al ‘Arab that 1 Wasaq is of 60 Sa’a and 1 Sa’a is of approximately 4 Ser (1 Ser is approximately 870 grams).
Such a large quantity of dates being spent from 21 dates can be explained only with the power of Allah.
