In the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa (May Allah shower His mercy on him), Rafa’a Yadain (lifting of hands) is to be done only on the first Takbeer (Takbir Tahrima) and nowhere else in the Salaat. In the opinion of Imam Shafa‘ee and Imam Ahmed (May Allah shower His mercy on him), apart from Takbir Tahrima, it is there before performing Ruku, after performing Ruku.
Hadhrat Muhaddith-e-Deccan (May Allah shower His mercy on him) has mentioned Hadith on the authority of Sahih Muslim, Jame’ Tirmidhi, Sunan Nasai, Sunan Abu Dawood, Musnad Imam Azam Abu Hanifa, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaiba, Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Kitab Ul Aathaar, Tahawi, Ibn ‘Adi, Baihaqui, etc. that in Salaat there is no Rafa’a Yadain apart from Takbir Tahrima. As per the research of Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Malik (May Allah shower His mercy on them), the Rafa’a Yadain mentioned in other Hadith has been abrogated and Imam Shafa‘ee and Imam Ahmed (May Allah shower His mercy on him) act upon it as per their research.
There is a Hadith in Sahih Muslim:
Translation: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir Bin Samurah (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) came to us and said: Why is it that I see you performing Rafa’a Yadain and raising your hands like the tails of wayward horses? While performing Salaat, be calm and composed. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 651)
There is a Hadith in Jame’ Tirmidhi and Sunan Abu Dawood:
Translation: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Alqama (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says: Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Mas‘ud (May Allah be well pleased with him) told us: Shall I not lead you in offering Salaat the way the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) did?
Hadhrat ‘Alqama (May Allah be well pleased with him) says that Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin Mas‘ud said this and led us in Salaat and performed Rafa’a Yadain only at the time of Takbir Tahrima. (Jame’ Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 238; Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 639; Sunan Nasai, Hadith No. 1048)
It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Mujahid (May Allah be well pleased with him) that I have offered Salaat behind Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them). Hadhrat Ibn Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) would not perform Rafa’a Yadain anywhere in Salaat except at the time of First Takbir (Takbir Tahrima). (Imam Tahawi has narrated this).
Imam Tahawi also says that it was the same ‘Abdullah bin Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) who saw the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) performing Rafa’a Yadain, then he himself gave up Rafa’a Yadain after the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).
That Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) gave up performing Rafa’a Yadain is because of the fact that in his opinion, it is established that the Rafa’a Yadain that he saw the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) performing has been abrogated and the proof of Rafa’a Yadain being abrogated is authenticated for him.
Imam ‘Aini (May Allah shower His mercy on him) writes that the proofs which are brought by those who consider Rafa’a Yadain to be correct can be explained in this manner that Rafa’a Yadain was performed in early days of Islam and was later abrogated and the proof that Rafa’a Yadain has been abrogated is that Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin Zubair (May Allah be well pleased with them) saw a person performing Rafa’a Yadain while going into Ruku’ and that person was also performing Rafa’a Yadain while getting up from Ruku’. Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin Zubair (May Allah be well pleased with them) then told that person not to perform Rafa’a Yadain while going into Ruku’ and getting up from it. This is such a thing that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) earlier performed it and then gave it up.
It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Ibrahim Nakha‘i (May Allah be well pleased with him) who narrates on the authority of Hadhrat Aswad (May Allah be well pleased with him) who says: I saw Hadhrat ‘Umar Bin Khattab (May Allah be well pleased with him) that he would raise his hands at the time of Takbir Tahrima and then would not repeat Rafa’a Yadain. (This has been narrated by Tahawi and Baihaqui and Tahawi has said that this Hadith is Sahih)
Hadhrat A’asim (May Allah be well pleased with him) narrates on the authority of his father, who was one of the students of Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him), that Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) would raise both his hands at the time of the first Takbir, which starts the Salaat and would not perform Rafa’a Yadain anywhere else in Salaat. (This has been narrated by Imam Muhammad, Tahawi and Ibn Shaiba)
Imam ‘Aini (May Allah shower His mercy on him) has said that the chain of narration of this Hadith is Sahih as per the standards of Sahih Muslim and Imam ‘Aini (May Allah shower His mercy on him) has also said that Rafa’a Yadain was abrogated for the whole Salaat except at Takbir Tahrima, was established in the opinion of Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him). That’s why in spite of having seen the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) perform Rafa’a Yadain, he gave it up in the whole Salaat except at Takbir Tahrima. If Rafa’a Yadain was not abrogated in the opinion of Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him), he would never have gave it up on his own.
Hadhrat ‘Alqama and Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin Mas‘ud (May Allah be well pleased with them) both have said: I myself have offered Salaat along with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and later with Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddiq and Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them). All the three of them would perform Rafa’a Yadain only at the Takbir Tahrima and would not do it again in the whole Salaat. (This has been narrated by Daraqutni and Ibn ‘Adi)
It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Ibrahim Nakha‘i (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said: Hadhrat ‘Abdullah Bin Mas‘ud (May Allah be well pleased with him) raised his hands only at the beginning of the Salaat, at the time of Takbir Tahrima, then did not perform Rafa’a Yadain anywhere else in Salaat.
