Islam is a complete way of life and it holds the solution to every issue that humans face in their life. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has granted us absolute guidance in all spheres of life through His blessed teachings and guidelines. He has not left His Ummah adrift in any sphere of life.
Modesty is such a basic building block of human character that no religion and no cultured person deny its importance and necessity. Thus, Islam orders modesty and chastity. When Allah Ta’ala ordered us to stay away from other sins, He ordered us not to indulge in them, but when Allah Ta’ala prohibited immodesty, He said:
And do not draw near to shameful deeds (whether) open or hidden. Surah An’aam (6:151
These are the words of Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi Qadri, Professor, Islamic Law, Jamia Nizamia, and Founder/Director Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center in the weekly lecture at Masjid Abul Hasanaat, which are organized under the aegis of Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center.
In the course of the lecture, Mufti Sahab quoted the following verse of the Holy Quran:
32. And do not even go near unlawful sex (adultery). Verily it is an act of lewdness and is the most evil way. Surah Isra (17:32)
Mufti Sahab said that modesty is the dividing line between humanness and animalism. Human beings need to realize their statute in this world and not do anything, which fells them below human nature.
Islam has declared modesty to be part of faith, as the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam):
Translation of Hadith: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Iman has more than 60 branches and modesty is a great branch of Iman. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 9)
Mufti Sahab said that modesty is such an important of faith. When those who hate Islam saw that it is not only difficult but well nigh impossible to budge Muslims from their faith, then with much thinking they came to the conclusion that the mother who nurse the Muslim children are very modest and chaste. Thus, the orientalists and others are making well coordinated efforts to deprive the Muslims of their priceless jewel of modesty. When immodesty takes root in their (our) society, then the steadfastness in Iman will cease to exist. We will gradually become devoid of all great qualities like self-respect, courage and chastity.
Mufti Sahab said that Islam has ordered us to steer clear of all those paths, which are creating tribulations for us. Such tribulations are being unleashed through Internet and mobile phone that households are within its grip. The advantages of the Internet are indeed too many and on a too large a scale. In spite of all this, it is a major source of immodesty. Entirely unrelated boys and girls establish relationships through e-mail and chatting. They come so close to each other that even their family members don’t know each other so intimately.
Muslim youth should stay away from immodesty that is getting dumped in our houses through TV and Internet. The parents and guardians should also keep an eye on their children both in the house and out of it, especially those who are attending schools/colleges, etc.
After the lecture, questions were asked by the audience about various topics, which were answered by the Mufti in light of the Holy Quran and the Hadith. Maulana Hafidh Syed Wahid Ali Qadri, teacher, Jamia Nizamia, led the proceedings.
