The number of the Ummahatul Momineen, the mothers of the believers is 11. Six of them are from the Quraish and the rest from other clans, etc.

The wisdom behind multiple marriages:
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has 11 wives. His first marriage was with Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) when He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was 25 years old. After she passed away, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) married Hadhrat Saudah (May Allah be well pleased with her) who was 55 years old. In 1st Hijri, at the age of 54 years, Hadhrat Aisha Siddiqua (May Allah be well pleased with her) came to live with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Except Hadhrat Aisha Siddiqua (May Allah be well pleased with her), no other wife was unmarried. Other wives had the honor of coming into His marriage between 1st Hijri and 9th Hijri although in this period all the battles, the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, the Conquest of Makkah, arrival of various delegations. Marrying them in spite of being this busy was for religious reasons.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) married such ladies from different clans who were very influential in their clans and all other people would follow them. Through this, their enmity with Islam was lessened and the pathways to love and understanding were opened, as it is human nature that we love our relations.
In the blessed nature of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), modesty was present to the utmost possible degree. It is necessary to guide and instruct women also in religious matters. It is the wisdom of Allah Ta’ala that through these blessed wives of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), the women and daughters of the Ummah received the details of the social life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and other instructions meant particularly for them. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) arranged for the education of women through the Ummahatul Momineen.
