Saying Aameen softly

According to the Hanafi School of thought, pronouncing Aameen softly is a Sunnah of our Holy Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam). As given in the Hadith of

 

(Jami Tirmidhi Shareef' Vol. No. 1, Pg. No. 58)

 

Translation: Hadhrat Alqama bin Wa'il (May Allah be well pleased with him) narrates on the authority of his father that the Holy Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) recited Surah Fatiha and said Aameen in a soft voice.

Regarding this narration, Imam Hakim in his Mustadrak Alal Sahiheen' has written: "This Hadith is authentic as per the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim.

Beside this, there are many Hadith which command us to say Aameen softly. In view of these Hadith, Hanafi jurists have said that pronouncing Aameen softly is a Sunnah. In case, it is pronounced audibly/loudly then it is Makruh (undesirable), but it doesn't terminate the Salaat.

Near the Imam Shafai (May Allah mercy be upon him), pronouncing Aameen audibly is Mandoob (Commendable). Those who follow him (the Shavafai) have authoritative proofs of their school of thought as well.
