Types of Haj
There are 3 kinds of Haj:
1. Haj Qiran.
2. Haj Tamatt’u
3. Haj Ifrad
Haj Qiran is the Haj in which Haj and Umrah are performed in 1 Ihram i.e. you cross the Meeqat in Ihram with the intention of performing both Haj and Ihram in the same Ihram.
In this Haj, Halaq (Shaving of the head) is not performed after performing the Umrah, but instead the Haji remains in Ihram and Haj is performed in the same Ihram.
Haj Tamatt’u is the Haj in which Haj and Umrah are performed in separate Ihram i.e. you cross Meeqat in Ihram with the intention of performing Umrah and after performing Umrah, the Ihram in unbound and when the days of Haj begin, then again the Ihram is bound with the intention of Haj.
Most people perform Haj Tamatt’u only.
Haj Ifrad is that Haj in which Ihram is bound only with the intention of performing Haj and after performing the Haj, the Ihram is unbound.
Meeqat are those boundaries which you cannot cross unless you are in Ihram.
Months of Haj:
Shawwal, Dhul Qa’ada and the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are the months of Haj.
There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Kitab Ul Haj :
Translation of Hadith: Hadhrat Abdullah Bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) said: Shawwal, Dhul Qa’ada and the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are the months of Haj.
The days of Haj:
There are 5 days of Haj:
8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah.
What is Fardh in Haj?
There are 3 things Fardh (obligatory) in Haj:
1. Ihraam
2. Stay in Arafaat (Wuquf-e-Arafaat)
3. Tawaf-e-Ziyarah.
Ihraam
This means making the intention of performing Haj and saying the Talbeeh (Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik…)
Wuquf-e-Arafaat:
Wuquf-e-Arafat is the most important Fardh in Haj and is its primary article. It means staying in Arafaat, be it for 1 moment after the twelve noon (Zawaal) of the 9th of Dhil Hijjah to the dawn (Subah Sadiq) of the 10th.
Tawaf-e-Ziyarah:
This means to perform the Tawaf of the Holy Ka'aba anytime between the dawn of the 10th Dhul Hijjah befor the sunset of 12th Dhul Hijjah.
Note: Performing these 3 articles in this order and performing each article in its appropriate place and time is also necessary. If any article from among these 3 is missed, then the Haj is not completed and this cannot be set right with slaughtering of an animal, etc.
What is Wajib in Haj?
The Wajib articles of Haj are 6:
1. Staying in Muzdalifa on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah after dawn (Subah Sadiq). The last time for this is before the rising of the sun.
2. Performing Sa'ee between Safa and Marwah.
3. Doing Rami i.e. throwing stones at Jamraat
4. Qurbani i.e. slaughtering an animal for those who are doing Haj Qiran or Haj Tamattu'.
5. Halq i.e. shaving the head or Qasr i.e. cutting the hair.
6. For an Aafaaqi, i.e. those who live outside the Meeqaat, performing the Tawaf Wada'a (Farewell Tawaf).
Note: If any Wajib from among these is missed, intentionally or unintentionally, Dam i.e. slaughtering a goat is Wajib.
