The machinations of the hypocrites
When Muslims were in Makkah, only the disbelievers were their enemy. However, the Emigration, there became 3 kinds of enemies – the disbelievers of Makkah, the Jews and the hypocrites.
All three of them were devising their own plans to defeat the Muslims and stop them from their work. The disbelievers of Makkah would hurt the Muslims on the basis of their power and strength. The Jews would use their wealth to trouble the Muslims and the hypocrites would stay among the Muslims and inform their enemies of their plans. Time and again, they would try to cast a wedge among the Muslims.
Once, there was a quarrel between the natives of Madina and the Emigrants about something and tempers got flared. The chief of the hypocrites ‘Abdullah bin Ubay was waiting for such a chance. He started saying to the natives of Madina: We are a people of dignity and honor and they are wretches. It is only because of your help that they have become so bold.
Voices were being raised on this insult that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) arrived. The moment Muslims saw the blessed face of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), they forgot everything else. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) then instructed and advised them in such a manner that they once again became the best of friends. Thus, the plot of the hypocrites failed.
The incident of Ifk
The hypocrites were deeply troubled by the exponential progress of Islam. Their jealousy deepened further. They were always on the lookout to create some disturbance.
They kept up their efforts and when returning from the Battle of Muraisee’, they made insinuations about the chastity of Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) and spread their slanderous thoughts among the populace.
Allah Most High declared the chastity of Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) through His Blessed Word. The slander against her was severely condemned and those who indulged in it were warned of the worst outcome. Moreover, 10 verses were revealed in the Holy Quran about the excellence and status of Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her).
Some simple-minded and naïve Muslims had also participated in the slander. Allah Most High forgave them and gave the hypocrites a warning of severe punishment.
