Hadhrat Mariya (May Allah be well pleased with her)
After the Treaty of Hudaibiya, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent letters to the kings and rulers of surrounding lands inviting them to Islam.
Hadhrat Hatib (May Allah be well pleased with him) was sent to a Roman ruler. He did not accept Islam but treated Hadhrat Hatib (May Allah be well pleased with him) with great respect. When he left Alexandria, the Roman ruler gave 2 slave girls to Hadhrat Hatib (May Allah be well pleased with him) as gifts for the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). One among them was Hadhrat Mariya (May Allah be well pleased with her). On the way, when Hadhrat Hatib (May Allah be well pleased with him) presented Islam to them and invited them to it, both embraced Islam.
On reaching Madina, one of the slaves, Hadhrat Sireen (May Allah be well pleased with her) was given to Hadhrat Hassaan bin Thabit (May Allah be well pleased with him). The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) took Hadhrat Mariya (May Allah be well pleased with her) for Himself.
Hadhrat Ibrahim (May Allah be well pleased with him), the Prophet’s third son was born of Hadhrat Mariya (May Allah be well pleased with her). He too passed away in infancy.
The Prophet treated Hadhrat Mariya (May Allah be well pleased with her) like He treated other mothers of the believers. He also asked her to observe Hijab. The Prophet would say: Treat the Coptic people kindly. They are our kin, by lineage and by agreement. By lineage – as the mother of Hadhrat Ismail (May peace be upon him) and the mother of My son, Ibrahim, are from that nation. By agreement – as we have an agreement with them.
Hafidh Ibn Katheer has written in Al Bidaaya Wan Nihaaya that Hadhrat Mariya (May Allah be well pleased with her) was a very pious lady.
After the demise of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr and Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) treated her with utmost respect and courtesy. She passed away in the era of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) in 16 Hijri in the month of Muharram.
Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) gathered all the people of Madina and himself led the Funeral Salaat. She is buried in Jannatul Baq’ee.
