A wife’s questions
It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Sa’eed Khudri (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says: A woman came to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) with some complaints about her husband. We were with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) at that time.
That woman said: Whenever I offer Salaat, my husband Hadhrat Safwan Ibn Mu’attal beats me. When I fast (supererogatory fasts), he makes me break them and he himself offers Salaat Ul Fajr after the sun has risen.
By coincidence, Safwan himself was also present there. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) asked Safwan about the complaints of his wife.
Safwan answered: When my wife says that I beat her when she offers Salaat (the reason is) she recites 2 (lengthy) Surah in Supererogatory Salaat and I have asked her not to do so.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said (to the wife): One Surah recited after Surah Fatiha is enough (for single or congregational Salaat).
Safwan said: When she says that when she fasts I make her break her fasts, the reason for this is that she keeps Supererogatory fasts continuously. I am a young man (and am busy in farming duties at night) thus find it difficult to stay away in daytime.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: No woman should (when her husband is present) keep Supererogatory fasts without the permission of her husband.
As far as her saying that I offer Salaat Ul Fajr after the sun has risen, the reason for this is that that we are farmers and it is known to all that (due to irrigation duties) we cannot (always) get up (early) in the morning.
On this, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Safwan, you should offer Salaat when you get up (should offer Salaat in its proper time or the Qadha Salaat if the time has passed).
This is related by Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah.
