Sins - Harms and Cure

The connection of heart with other parts of the body is such that whatever they do has its effect on the heart.  Good deeds develop radiance and bad deeds spread murkiness.  The relationship of the heart with Allah Most High is that He manifests Himself in the heart.

Impiety is a veil between the heart and Allah Most High, which flaws the heart.  As one can’t see one’s reflection in a flawed mirror, in the same way a flawed heart is deprived of vision both here and in the next world.

Inflation, contagious diseases, lack of peace, out of season rains, thus, all afflictions and difficulties are due to sins only.

Sins are through the base Self (Nafs) and good deeds are through the Soul (Ruh).  A fruit vine in an unfertile land bears small fruit and in a fertile land bears big ones.  The base self is similar to an unfertile land, whereas the soul is a good one.  That’s why a sin is counted as only one and a virtuous deed is counted as 10 for each one.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) says:  Unlucky is the one whose singles exceed his tens i.e. even then the virtuous deeds are less than the sins.

Sins have nothing but harm, which is understood at the time of death.  What can one say about death? Who knows this moment may be our last moment.  Man people died sitting.  They were walking, fell and died.  Under what delusion do you labor?  Repent from sins and try not to commit sins again.  If by chance some sins are committed, then repent again, the way if a disease comes again, again treatment is sought.

When one committing too many sins, difficulties of the inner aspect (Batin) come.  Even then if a slave doesn’t heed it, then apparent difficulties keep coming.

Why were the wealth, honor and grandeur of Muslims ruined?  Why are the rains untimely?  Why is there a reduction in the growth of grains, fruits and vegetables reduced?  Why did our leisure vanish?  Listen!  The basic reason for all this is the harm of sins.

By prolonged execution of sins darkness develops in the heart.  Consequently, one doesn’t even feel realize that one is sinning.  For this reason, one starts taking a certain pleasure in sins. Otherwise, there is nothing more distasteful than sins, but this distaste is not felt at the time of sinning and afterwards, its evils abound.  Thus, the heart never feels any solace in sins.  If there is any comfort and tranquility, it is in developing a relationship with Allah Most High and in His remembrance.

The sins committed under the influence of desires can be pardoned like the slip-up of Hadhrat Adam (May peace be upon him).  But, there’s no hope for a sin which is committed because of pride and vanity like the sin of Iblees, the accursed, which was due to pride.

If you end up sinning due to anger and the base desires, then keep thinking that what you have done is wrong.  This will pinch the heart in a way.  It is as if one mixed some cold water in hot water.  Although the hot water will not become cold because of it, but its original hotness also will not remain.

Due to sins, bitterness is created in the heart.  In our carnality, we hold this bitterness and harm as the pleasure of sins.  This pleasure is of the kind that a person suffering from itch gets with scratching and after that he feels severe agony.  In the same way, today you are taking pleasure in sins, but tomorrow the same pleasure will make you cry endless tears.

To burn down a house, a small flame or big one is alike.  Similarly, to burn down the edifice of faith, minor sins and major sins are all alike.  For this reason, safeguard against the deceit of Satan, along with major sins, stay away from the minor sins as well.

The easiest way to get rid of sins is to restrain oneself from giving in to carnal desires and not to obey it.  For some days, you will be tested, then divine help will aid you and you will be given dominance over your base self.  Take courage and keep trying.  When there is a bout between wrestlers, full strength is exerted by both parties.  Only then is the competitor defeated.  In the same way, you exert all your strength against your base self.

The appropriate time of crying is when sinning.  There is no hardship like a sin.  How much ever you want to cry, cry for your sins.  Hadhrat Adam (May peace be upon him) left eating and drinking for 40 days because of a single sin.  He kept crying for 200 years.  Out of shame, he wouldn’t raise his head.  Our state is that in spite of hundreds of sins, we don’t cry at all.  Maulana Rumi (May Allah shower His mercy on him) says:

Translation: Unless the cloud cries, a garden doesn’t laugh. And until a child cries, milk doesn’t well up in the bosom of the mother.  A weeping cloud makes a garden laugh, and child’s crying causes milk to well up in the mother’s bosom.
