Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with love. It is just a custom of immodesty.
Islam is a religion of culture which enjoins decency and chastity. It instructs to stay away from all kinds of indecencies so that nobody is tarred with the brush of lewdness. To make the Muslims bearers of lofty moral and character, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has declared modesty to be a great branch of faith. Modesty is that priceless pearl which distinguishes human beings from animals. Modesty is the attribute which saves human beings from wrong deeds. Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran:
And do not draw near to shameful deeds (whether) open or hidden. Surah An’aam (6:151)
February 14 is celebrated as “Valentine’s Day” which was actually started in memory of a Roman priest. This day, in the name of love, morals are destroyed and the veil of modesty is rent. Young guys and girls wear red clothes on this day and exchange flowers and cards and send romantic text messages to each other. In blind following of western culture, this indecency has been given the name of “love” and people are made to think that a proposal given in the name of love shouldn’t be rejected. They claim that this is the day of love and every person who has a heart celebrates this day and those who don’t, have stones in their bosoms instead of hearts. They are stopping people from spreading love in this world.
These are the words of those people who do not realize what exactly Valentine’s Day is and its harms. Only such unaware and ignorant people can invite people to harm with such intellectual talk.
Allah Most High warns of severe punishment for those who want to spread lewdness among the Muslims:
Indeed, those who like that lewdness should spread amongst the Muslims, for them is an agonizing punishment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows (the intentions of such people) and you do not know. Surah Noor (24:19)
Those who are opposed to the Islamic way of life are striving to label lewdness and obscenity as the sign of refinement and liberal thinking. They are presenting indecent customs in such a manner that Muslims are falling prey to them forgetting their own timeless teachings and culture. Nowadays, roaming with members of the opposite sex and pre-marital sex is being considered a matter of pride. The result of all this is that these things are not limited anymore to clubs and hotels but the veil of modesty is being rent in temples of learning and in public as well.
We can test the benefits and harms of this custom. Any sober, unprejudiced person will also testify as to the worthlessness and harm of these customs. If marriage is performed at the appropriate juncture in life, then the youth can be safe from indecency and young girls can safeguard their chastity. Indecency has become so rampant in the society that it is extremely difficult for youth to protect and guard their chastity. Because of the indecent atmosphere, the desire of the youth is stirred and as they have no permissible way of satisfying it, they fall prey to adultery, which results in hitherto unheard of diseases and fuels disagreement and discord.
If someone celebrates Valentine’s Day as a custom of the world, then we should see what benefits accrue to our life from it and to humanity in general. In this light, Valentine’s Day is nothing but a rite of immodesty and promotes nothing but lewdness. Just think of it:
On Valentine’s Day, all other useful engagements are forgotten.
This custom smears and spoils etiquette and character.
This is the day when youngsters have lewd meetings with each other, such meetings that neither a brother will like it nor a father will accept it.
Alas that educated people should label this lewd day as a day of love!
If Valentine’s Day is a love, then why are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends, etc. not included in this love? If the aim is to spread love per se then do one’s own relatives and friends not deserve that love?
Apart from the fact that this and such days are being used to impose the culture of the west on us and to render us unaware and careless of our own culture, there are many other evils in this day as well. It is like a vortex of lewdness and indecency. Those who get stuck in it can never steer clear of it.
Now those who value the customs of their faith and country and desire that the society doesn’t turn into a den of indecency and vice, they are perfectly right in not celebrating Valentine’s Day and perfectly right in not supporting it either.
