Some necessary clarifications about a commonly faced problem

 

Some people have a problem have a problem of leaking urine after relieving themselves.  This has become fairly common nowadays and there is much confusion regarding this.  This article is being penned to clear the confusion regarding these issues.

 

How to stop leakage

 

If somebody does leak urine after relieving himself, that person should wait until the remaining droplets also come out.  During this time, one should cough or clear the throat.  When it is felt that there is no more danger of leakage, then one may go ahead and perform ablution (Wudhu), etc.

 

In case of leakage

 

There can be 2 cases if a person has leakage after relieving himself.  Either it can be the leakage which comes after urine (Wadi) and most of the times, it is that only.  This only invalidates the ablution (Wudhu) and does not compel one to take a full bath.  Making a new ablution is enough.  As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg No: 9/10.

 

In case the leakage is semen, then a full bath (Ghusl) becomes Compulsory (Wajib) only when it comes out in a state of arousal with contractions of the private parts.  If the person does not have any desire at the time of ejaculation, then as per the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, it is not Compulsory (Wajib) to take a full bath.  For example, if somebody lifts a heavy weight and ejaculates, that does not make a bath Compulsory.  As given in Badaai’ Us Sanaai’, Vol. 1, Pg No: 148.

 

If any person leaks semen when relieving, then if there is any desire at that time, then a bath will become Compulsory (Wajib) and if there is no desire, then taking a full bath is not necessary, regardless of the quantity of semen.

 

Leakage while journeying

 

If in a journey, you don’t get water you may use a clod of earth to clean yourself.  You may also use specially made toilet paper for this purpose.  Please remember that using any other paper, apart from toilet paper, like the paper of books, magazines is Undesirable (Makruh).  If you do not use anything to clean yourself, then taking a full bath (Ghusl) is not necessary.  You may only wash the private parts.  It is better if you change the urine-stained clothes as well.

 

If someone faces a chronic problem of leakage

 

If a person suffers from dribbling of urine all or most of the times, he should check whether he comes in the category of exemption.  The principle given by the Islamic Law experts is that if any person suffers from gases (acidity) or some such problem, which goes on continuously, so much so that that person cannot be free from it even for the time taken to offer Obligatory (Fardh) Salaat, then that person is exempted.

 

If that person comes under this category, then to protect his body, clothes and the surroundings from urine droplets, he should use a plastic bag or some such thing.

 

As per the given details, if that person is not exempted, but this condition occurs only at particular times, then apart from the times when he would offer Salaat, he may use a plastic bag, etc.  He should offer Salaat when not even a drop of urine leaks out.  As given in Maraaqil Falaah Sharh Noorul Idhaah.
