Hadhrat Noor Muhammad Badayuni – Life and teachings
(May Allah shower His Mercy on him)
Hadhrat Khaja Noor Muhammad (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) was a scion of a Syed family. In the normative sciences, he was an accomplished jurist. He remained in service of Hadhrat Khaja Saifuddin (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) for many years and drew benefit from him. Apart from him, he also remained in the service of the descendents of Hadhrat Shaykh ‘Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlwi and Hadhrat Hafidh Muhsin, the caliph of Hadhrat Khaja Muhammad Masoom (May Allah shower His Mercy on all of them).
In his early life, he was overwhelmed with ecstasy for 15 years. He would come out of it at the time of the daily Salaat and after offering it, would again go into ecstasy. Due to remaining in meditation for long periods of time, a hump developed in his back.
He would be very meticulous about following the Sunnah. Once while entering the bathroom, he entered with his right foot first. For only this slight slipup, his spiritual states remained constrained for 3 days and he very humbly repented for this. He would be constantly going through the books of the blessed life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and would follow even the minutiae of His Sunnah.
He was very careful in his food and drink. He would himself cook food of several days and would eat from it when extremely hungry. He would say that since 30 years the kind of food is immaterial for me, meaning that there is no question of like and dislike with regard to food. He would eat whatever he got.
He would consider having 2 curries on the meal cloth as against the Sunnah. Thus, he would give ghee to one son of his and sugar to another. He would never eat anything that came from rich people. He would say that it is not above suspicion.
However, the food from Nawab Mukarram Khan was an exception to this. This person was a descendent of Hadhrat Khaja Bahauddin Naqshband (May Allah shower His Mercy on him). He had been a governor of Lahore, then left everything and remained in the service of Hadhrat Khaja Muhammad Masoom (May Allah shower His Mercy on him). Once, Emperor Aurangzeb asked the Nawab: What is your age? He replied: 4 years. The Emperor smiled at this. The Nawab replied: The time that I have spent with my Shaykh is my actual age. The life before that is simply a misfortune of the hereafter.
His spiritual accomplishments
The inward aspect of the Shaykh was like a mirror. He would see with his inner eye such things that others could not see with their actual eyes.
He would immediately be aware of the slips of the disciples and would advise them as necessary. Once a disciple was coming to the Shaykh and he ended up staring at a non-Mahram woman. The moment the Shaykh saw him, he said: It seems you have the darkness of adultery. Maybe, you ended up seeing some non-Mahram woman. Then the Shaykh removed that (spiritual) darkness with his grace.
Once, a disciple was coming to the Shaykh and on the way, spoke to a drunkard. The Shaykh looked at him and said: I see the darkness of drinking in your inward aspect. Maybe, you met a drunkard on the way. The Shaykh would say that the spiritual connection (Nisbah) is blemished by meeting sinful people.
Like sins, people’s virtues were also apparent to the Shaykh. If someone would recite the declaration of faith La Ilaaha…. before going to the Shaykh, the Shaykh would mention it. Similarly, if someone recited Durood before meeting the Shaykh, the Shaykh would make a mention of it.
Maintaining the rights of the neighbors
A seller of marijuana was a neighbor of the Shaykh. The Shaykh once remarked: The darkness of marijuana constrains our spirituality. A disciple forcibly shifted the marijuana seller from that place. When the Shaykh came to know of it, he said: Our spirituality is even more constrained now, as that person was made to leave in an un-Islamic manner. First, he should have been advised to repent. After that, force might have been used.
The Shaykh searched for him and called him. He sought that person’s forgiveness on behalf of his disciples. The Shaykh gave him some money and advised him that engaging in an un-Islamic profession was not good at all and that he should search for some lawful source of income. The marijuana seller was much affected by the manners of the Shaykh and repented against that.
Some miracles of the Shaykh
Once a woman came to Hadhrat Noor Muhammad Badayuni (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) and said: A jinn has carried away my daughter. We have tried various things but to no avail. Hadhrat Noor (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) cast his gaze on the woman. He meditated for some time and said: At so and so time, your daughter will be back at your house. The girl returned at that appointed time. When she was asked about her ordeal, she said: I was sitting all alone in a desert. A saintly person took my hand and brought me here.
A person asked Hadhrat Noor (May Allah shower His Mercy on him): Why did you wait for some time and then say that your daughter will be back at so and so time? Why didn’t you say it immediately? The Shaykh said: I first meditated and entreated Allah Most High that if I have such power, then I will attempt it. I was inspired that I do have the power. Then I stepped up and said that your girl will be back at so and so time.
Two women came to the Shaykh with the intention of testing him and demanded that they be initiated in the order. The Shaykh divined that these women were actually from the Raafdhi sect. He told them: First repent your wrong beliefs. Then you can enter the order. One woman realized the greatness of the Shaykh and repented. The other did not and remained devoid of the blessings of the order.
A disciple of the Shaykh was overwhelmed by his base desires and was about to commit fornication. Suddenly the Shaykh’s face was seen there and the woman got frightened and retreated into a corner. Thus, the disciple was prevented from committing a great sin and repented.
Hadhrat Mirza Mazhar (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) says: One day, the Shaykh was very happy. When I asked him about it, he said: Today a lot of fans were distributed among the dervishes. I am seeing that Allah Most High as accepted this act and blessings are descending upon us like rain.
Demise
He passed away in 1135 Hijri (1724 AD) and was buried in the orchard of Nawab Mukarram Khan, which is to the south of the shrine of Hadhrat Nizamuddin Auliya (May Allah shower His Mercy on him).
His premier caliph, Hadhrat Mirza Mazhar (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) said: Alas that you were not able to see Hadhrat Syed (May Allah shower His Mercy on him). One would be reminded of the greatness of Almighty Allah on seeing him, that such accomplished personages are also there in His creation.
