Hadhrat Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) – The confidant of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him)

The confidant of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

Allah Most High has granted innumerable excellences to Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) and has graced him with lofty qualities.  Generosity and modesty are his distinguishing qualities.  He was a close confidant of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and was entrusted with divine secrets.  Whenever wealth was needed for the cause of Islam, he would freely spend his wealth.

At a time when Muslims were poverty-stricken and were facing a drought, the enemies of Islam decided to attack the Muslims.  Their thoughts were that if Muslims were attacked in such hard times, they could be wiped out from the face of the earth.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) became busy in preparing an army.  He proclaimed to the Companions (May Allah be well pleased with them):  Is there anyone who will assist in the preparation of this army?  Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) stood up and contributed 950 camels laden with all things necessary, 50 horses, 10,000 Dinar and 700 Uqiyya (a unit of measure in those times) of gold.  The Companions (May Allah be well pleased with them) say that on that occasion, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) gave so many blessings to Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) that they had never seen Him bless anyone like that at any time.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  After this, let ‘Uthman do what he wants.  Nothing can harm him.

These are the words of Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi, Professor, Islamic Law, Jamia Nizamia, Founder-Director, Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center, in the weekly lecture conducted under the aegis of AHIRC in Masjid Abul Hasanaat.

The revered Mufti said that from some quarters base allegations are being leveled against Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) in spite of the fact that his truthfulness, honesty and stature is without a blemish with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  This is the reason that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent him as an envoy to Makkah on the occasion of the Treaty of Hudaibiyah.

By selecting Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) as the envoy of Islam, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has given the message that He has complete trust in the honesty of Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) and that his honesty is beyond reproach.

When the Makkans detained Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him), a rumor spread among the Muslims that Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) has been martyred.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) took the pledge of allegiance from all the Companions.  Then He placed His own right hand of His left and said:  O Allah!  This hand is on behalf of ‘Uthman and this pledge is on his behalf.  He is engaged in the work of Allah Most High and His Prophet.

When the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) declared His hand as the hand of Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him), one honor he got was that his hand was declared to be the hand of the Prophet.  The other honor was that Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) also received a special share from the generosity of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) spent his wealth in charity so freely that history is hard put to quote a parallel.

The third honor which Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) received was that when his hand was declared to be the hand of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), then as the Holy Quran declares that the hand of the Prophet is the hand (power and authority) of Allah Most High, the hand of Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him) also developed an absolute relationship with the hand of Allah Most High.  For this reason, the momentous task of compiling the Holy Quran was accomplished at his hand.

The revered Mufti quoted from Jame’ Tirmidhi that once a bier was brought to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) did not lead the funeral Salaat of the deceased.  He said:  This person used harbored enmity for ‘Uthman.  Allah Most High dislikes this person most severely.

The revered Mufti also quoted from Kanz Ul ‘Ummal that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said a special prayer for Hadhrat ‘Uthman (May Allah be well pleased with him):  O Allah!  On the Day of Judgment, due to his modesty, ‘Uthman will not be able to stand in Your Presence.  Thus, o Allah!  Accept My intercession in his favor.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Every Prophet has a companion and My companion in paradise is ‘Uthman.  May Allah be well pleased with him.

The session ended with Salaam and Dua.  Maulana Hafidh Syed Ahmed Ghouri Naqshbandi, Teacher, Jamia Nizamia, led the proceedings.
