The favors of Allah Most High on human beings
It is mentioned in another Hadith that those people who do not have love for Allah, they are addressed by Him thus:
‘O foolish slave! The one whom you love forsaking Us, is that entity better than Us? If you love someone because that person has bestowed favors on you, then do those favors exceed My favors on you? Our favors and innumerable bounties on you are not from today, but you are being bestowed with favors even before you were born. You were a thing of naught, forgotten! We created you with Our hands. You were sometimes a drop of semen and sometimes a lump of meat. We formed your bones, then your sinews and covered you with flesh and skin. We sent you to this as a perfectly-formed human being, then kept you as an infant, then you came of age, through middle age and old age. You have been bestowed with (nothing but) Our favors in every state. You grew up in our bounties only. O ungrateful human! In spite of all this, We haven’t bestowed any favor on you? We provide you the necessities of life in every state, all the time. Our favors on you are boundless.
If you were to count the Allah’s favor you would not be able to number them. Whosoever bestows any favor on you, in is in fact Our favor on you. If We had not cast into his heart to bestow favors on you, would he have done so? Never!
You are like that beggar who asks of a king. The king orders his minister to give, the minister to trustworthy, trustworthy to treasurer and treasurer asked the peon to give the beggar. The ignorant beggar said: The peon has bestowed a favor on me. The peon will say: It is the treasurer who bestowed the favor on you. treasurer will in turn name the secretary and the secretary will in turn name the minister. The minister, who is close to king, fears that if the king hears of it, he will think that I intend partnership with him and will be displeased.
That’s why the minister tells the poor beggar:
Don’t be such an ignoramus, and don’t let go of etiquette. The owner of the treasure is the king and he bestows favors on everyone. He is the benefactor of us all.
Similarly, o foolish slave, the real benefactor is Me, but you have abandoned Me and think of our creations as the benefactor. What naivety is this?
O foolish slave! If you love someone because that person is pious and just, like you may love the king because he is just and helps the poor, although neither are you from his kingdom nor he is your benefactor. In this sense too, it is We who has the right to be loved as Our favors are common to all creation. There is none who can bestow upon you and fulfill your needs but Allah.
If you love someone because of their beauty then speak, do you like the outward beauty or inward beauty? If you are enamored of outward beauty, then think how beautiful is the One who gave beauty and grace to the damsels of paradise? Just think about this. If you could bear it, we would have given you a vision of Ours in this world itself. The real pleasure of experiencing our beauty will be on the Day of Judgment.
If your love is due to inward beauty (i.e. knowledge, power, etc.), then know that the knowledge of all that has passed and all that will pass is nothing before Our knowledge. If you love people because of their power like one keeps hearing of the bravery of say Rustum and develops love for him, then even from this viewpoint, your love should be for Us. Everything is in Our Power. We can destroy a great king only with a mosquito. We do what We will. There is no one to question Us, no one to refuse Our command.
If you love someone because of their righteousness and piety, then realize that this attribute is also Ours in its most perfect form
The Absolute Ruler, the Pure One’ are our names. Our nature (essence) is flawless and beneficial.
O Ungrateful human! Did you listen to this Hadith? In what ways our Lord, our master is exhorting you to develop love for Him and to have his love and you still remain drifting in dreams of negligence. The Lord awakens you but you don’t even desire to awake. Don’t you remember that death has been decreed for you? The grave is your actual home. The soil is your carpet. The day of anxiety i.e. the Day of Judgment is before you. An army of dead people awaits you. They have taken very stern vows that they will not budge unless they make you join them.
O neglectful human! Are you aware that every dead person desires to come back to this world just for one day so that they can achieve the love of Allah and return? But their desire will remain forever unfulfilled. You still have time to acquire the love of Allah, but you aren’t doing it. Look! You are being deceived. One day you also have to join the ranks of the deceased. Very soon, a pit in the ground will be your grave. Alas that you have forgotten it!
O you who have forgotten that you have to stand before the Lord Almighty! Have some fear! With what courage will you stand in front of your Lord? How will you answer His questions? Hadhrat Noori (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) says: The reckoning on the Day of Judgment is not long and lengthy, it is just two words. Almighty Allah will summon you in front of Him and ask:
‘O my slave I was yours, with whom were you?
