Signs of Shab Qadr

Ramadhan is a wellspring of mercy and blessings.  It is a month of profuse worship and establishing Salaat and fasting and to busy oneself in Dhikr and Durud and Salaam.

A true believer spends his/her days and nights is giving charity, obeying the orders of Allah Most High and staying away from what is prohibited.  In this month all Muslims become the very embodiments of virtue and goodness.

Indeed it is a blessing of Ramadhan that it turns even sinners into habituated virtuous folk.  It enrobes them with the garment of piety.

Ramadhan is the month in which all arrangements are made to forgive the sins of the Ummah.  Along with this the value of good deeds is also increased and their reward is increased.  In this month such an auspicious night is granted to the worshippers, which is superior to 1000 months, which is called “Shab Qadr” (The night of power)

Shab Qadr is a night of greatness, excellence and blessings.  This is the auspicious night when the Holy Quran was revealed.  In this night, angels descend.  In this night those who are busy in worship and remembrance of Almighty Allah are granted the reward of worshiping for 1000 months.  Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran:

Surely, We sent down this (Holy Qur’an) during the Night of Destiny.

And what have you made out what the Night of Destiny is?

The Night of Destiny is better than a thousand months (in merit, blessings, reward and recompense).

The angels and the Spirit of Peace (Gabriel) descend by their Lord’s command during this (night) with decrees concerning all matters (of blessings and bounties).

This (night) is (absolute) peace and security till daybreak.  Surah Qadr (97:1-5)

Signs of Shab Qadr

What are the signs of Shab Qadr and how can we know that we have gotten Shab Qadr?  There are Hadith about this to guide us.  Imam Jalaluddin Suyuti (May Allah shower His mercy on him) has mentioned a detailed Hadith about this in his Tafseer Durre Manthur:

Translation: Imam Ahmed, Imam Ibn Jareer, Imam Muhammad bin Nasr, Imam Baihaqui, Imam Ibn Mardaway have narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Ubada bin Saamit (May Allah be well pleased with him) that he heard from the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) about Shab Qadr and the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  It is in the last 10 days of Ramadhan.  It is in the odd nights, either the 21st, the 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th or the last night of Ramadhan.  The person who in a state of faith (Iman), with the intention of reward stand up in prayer in this night, then all the past sins of that person are forgiven and it has the following signs:  (1)  That night is exceptionally bright.  (2)  It is very clear.  (3)  It is very calm.  (4)  It has a delicious silence.  (5)  It is neither too warm nor too cold.  It is as if this night the moon is spreading its light.  (6)  This night, no star wanes until the morning dawns.  (7)  It is also among its signs that the next morning the sun rises full, like the full moon.  (8)  Almighty Allah has forbidden for Satan to rise this day along with the sun.  (Durr Manthur, Surah Qadr-2)
