It does not befit a Muslim to celebrate Valentine's Day

Islam is a religion of culture which enjoins decency and chastity.  It instructs to stay away from all kinds of indecencies so that nobody is tarred with the brush of lewdness.  To make the Muslims bearers of lofty moral and character, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has declared modesty to be a great branch of faith.  Modesty is that priceless pearl which distinguishes human beings from animals.  Modesty is the attribute which saves human beings from wrong deeds.  Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran:

And do not draw near to shameful deeds (whether) open or hidden.  Surah An’aam (6:151)

These are the words of Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi Qadri, Professor, Islamic Law, Jamia Nizamia, Founder-Director, Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center, in the weekly lecture at Masjid Abul Hasanaat under the auspices of Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center.

The revered Mufti said in most countries February 14 is celebrated as “Valentine’s Day” which was actually started in memory of a Roman priest.  This day, in the name of love, morals are destroyed and the veil of modesty is rent.  Young guys and girls wear red clothes on this day and exchange flowers and cards and send romantic text messages to each other.  In blind following of western culture, this indecency has been given the name of “love” and people are made to think that a proposal given in the name of love shouldn’t be rejected.

The revered Mufti said that nowadays, those who are opposed to the Islamic way of life are striving to label lewdness and obscenity as the sign of refinement and liberal thinking.  They are presenting indecent customs in such a manner that Muslims are falling prey to them forgetting their own timeless teachings and culture.  Nowadays, roaming with members of the opposite sex and pre-marital sex is being considered a matter of pride.  The result of all this is that these things are not limited anymore to clubs and hotels but the veil of modesty is being rent in temples of learning and in public as well.

The revered Mufti said that all such customs are against the teachings of Islam.  Any sober, unprejudiced person will also testify as to the worthlessness and harm of these customs.  If marriage is performed at the appropriate juncture in life, then the youth can be safe from indecency and young girls can safeguard their chastity.  Indecency has become so rampant in the society that it is extremely difficult for youth to protect and guard their chastity.  Because of the indecent atmosphere, the desire of the youth is stirred and as they have no permissible way of satisfying it, they fall prey to adultery, which results in hitherto unheard of diseases and fuels disagreement and discord.

The revered Mufti quoted a Hadith from Jame’ Tirmidhi that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  When you get a proposal of a person about whose religiousness and character you are satisfied, then wed (your daughter) to that person without delay.  If this is not done, then there will be a great unrest and tribulation on earth.

The session ended with Salaam and Du’a.  Maulana Hafidh Muhammad Afsaruddin Qadri, Kamil Jamia Nizamia, recited the Na’at and Maulana Hafidh Syed Ahmed Ghouri, Teacher, Jamia Nizamia, led the proceedings.
