Miracles of the Prophets and the saints

The miracles of the Prophets and the Companions and the saints are established by the Holy Quran and the Hadith.  The consensus of the scholars of the Ummah on this issue is also well established.

Those pious servants of Almighty Allah who spent each and every moment of their lives in remembrance of Allah, who stayed away from the pleasures of this world and focused all their energies in the propagation of Islam, for them, there are great stations in the hereafter.  To express their excellence in this world, Allah Most High has granted them various distinctions as well.  Almighty Allah says:

And surely We wrote in the al-Zabur (the Psalms) after (stating the) admonition that the inheritors of the earth (in the Hereafter) will be My pious servants.  Surah Ambiya (21:105)

The exegetes have written in the exegesis of this verse of the Holy Quran that “….” mentioned here is the land of paradise and some exegetes have opined that this means the land of this world.  ‘Allama Ibn Katheer writes about this verse that the saints and the pious folk are the inheritors of both lands, the land of this world and the land of the hereafter.

Translation: Almighty Allah is describing those things which have been decreed for pious bondsmen of his that there is felicity of this world and the hereafter for them and they are the inheritors of land in this world and the next.  (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Vol. 5, Pg. No. 384, Surah Ambiya-105)

This verse of the Holy Quran makes it clear that Almighty Allah has made the saints and pious people the inheritors of the earth.  An authorized person has authority over his/her own possessions.  These people are powerful here.  The miracles expressed at their hands are called “Karamaat”.

It is an agreed-upon tenet of the Ahle Sunnah that the miracles of the saints are all established by the Holy Quran and the Hadith.  This is a fact which cannot be ignored, as given in the famous basic tract of beliefs “Sharh Aqaaid Nasafi”:

Translation: The miracles of the saints are legitimate.  (Sharh Aqaaid Nasafi, Pg. No. 144)

The miracles of the saints are in fact manifestations of the miracles of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and their blessings.  The miracles of the saints obviate the truthfulness of Islam to the world that the religion of the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in whom these saints believe is the true religion, that the law brought by the one in whose Prophethood they believe is the correct law.  The miracles of the saints affirm the religion of Islam.
