Who deserves Jannah ? In light of the Holy Quran

Who deserves Jannah – In light of the Holy Quran

Allah Ta'ala has mentioned the attributes who deserve and are the inheritors of Jannatul Firdaus.  Some of their characteristics and attributes have been mentioned in the beginning verses of Surah Momineen.

There is a Hadith in Jame’ Tirmidhi that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: 10 verses have been revealed to me and whoever fulfils those conditions will enter Jannah.  Then He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) recited the first 10 verses of Surah Momineen.  (Jame’ Tirmidhi, Hadith No.  3472).

The “Falah” i.e.  success mentioned in the first verse of Surah Al-Momineen does not mean success of any 1 kind, but means success of both the worlds.  A person with these 10 qualities will be blessed in this world and in the Aakhirah (hereafter) only that kind of person will be successful.

First quality

The first quality of those who deserve Jannah is “Iman,” which is the most basic requirement.  Iman means acknowledging all that has come from Allah Ta'ala through the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) with one’s heart.

A Momin (true believer) does not follow his/her own intellect, but is obedient to the Holy Quran and the Sunnah.  His/her belief does not hang by the weak thread of incomprehensible or one’s own philosophies, but rests on what the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) told.

Iman of the Sahabah – Standard for the Ummah

Allah Ta'ala has declared the Iman of the Sahabah as the standard and touchstone for the whole Ummah.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: If anyone of you gives away in charity gold like the mountain of Uhud, even then he (or she) cannot get the reward the Sahabah get by giving away a small amount of barley.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No.  6652) and those Sahabah whose Iman is the standard for the whole Ummah describe their faith of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam):

O Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)! All of us cannot become even like one attribute of Yours.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No.  20)

Second quality

The second quality of those enter Jannah is that they offer Salaat with complete sincerity and devotion.  This means that while offering Salaat their whole attention is in the Salaat only and they turn to Allah Ta'ala with their whole being and reflect and think about the recitations/prayers which they recite in the Salaat.  Also, they should follow the external rules of Salaat as well.

The word “ Khushoo’ ” is a very comprehensive word, which included the outward and the inward aspects of worship.  It is given in Sahih Bukhari: You worship Allah Ta'ala as if you are seeing Him, even if you can’t do that, still pray with the same devotion, as He is seeing you.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No.  50)

Third quality

The third quality of those will enter Jannah is that they don’t pay attention to useless and ridiculous things.

The word “ Laghu ” means any word/deed, which is without any benefit and useless.

The majesty of a Momin is such that he/she does not waste time in useless things.  Leave alone engaging in them, a Momin does not even pay attention to them.  If by chance a Momin passes by such things, even then he/she protects himself/herself and leaves alone these things and goes away with grace and dignity.

Fourth quality

The 4th quality of those who deserve Jannah is that they pay Zakaat.

The Mufassirin (experts in the interpretation of the Holy Quran) say that this means they do things which clean their heart.

Fifth quality

In the light of the Holy Quran, the 5th quality of those inherit Jannah is that they guard their modesty and chastity.

Sixth quality

Their 6th quality is that they fulfill their promises and their trust (Amaanat).  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has declared breaking a promise and breaching trust as a sign of the hypocrites (Munafiqin).

Seventh quality

The 7th quality of those deserve Jannah is that they guard their Salaat most carefully.

Those who have these qualities are given the glad tidings by the Lord Almighty Allah Ta'ala that they only inherit Jannah and will receive inheritance of Jannah.  As given in Surah Al Momineen – 11.

Those who have the qualities and attributes described in these 10 verses receive the blessings and ni’mah of both the worlds and these people are the means of peace and reformation in the world, as these 10 verses remind us of Tauheed, Prophethood, worship and dealings and social life and manners.
