Ummahatul Momineen

Because of their relation with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), the status of His wives is most superior.  Many of the verses of the Holy Quran are revealed about their dignity.

In the Hadith of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also their greatness and virtues are mentioned.

Allah Ta’ala says in The Holy Quran:

O Wives of the Messenger! You are not the like of any of the womenfolk.

Surah Ahzaab (33:32)

Imam Razi (May Allah shower His mercy on him) mentions in the Tafseer (interpretation/exegesis) of this verse of the Holy Quran:

Translation: The wives of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) enjoy that status, which other women can’t.  These virtuous and chaste are the mothers of all the believers (Ummahaatul Mumineen) and the faithful and are the wives of the leader of all Prophets.  (Tafseer Razi, Surah Ahzaab, 32)

This verse makes it clear that because of the blessings and excellence of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and their closeness with Him the wives of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) enjoy a unique and eminent status among all the women of the world and which none other can share with them

Allah Ta’ala says in the Holy Quran:

And his (pure) wives are their mothers.  Surah Ahzaab (33:6)

Allah Ta’ala says in The Holy Quran:

......nor is this (lawful) that you marry his (pure) wives after him, till the end of time.  Surah Ahzaab (33:53)

And Allah Ta’ala says in the Holy Quran:

And when you ask them (the pure wives) for something, ask them from behind a curtain.

Surah Ahzaab (33:53)

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also said:

"The best amongst you are those who treat my wives the best"

There is a difference in opinions of the regarding biographers about the number and order of marriages.  However, all agree about eleven Ummahaatul Mumineen.

The major reason for marrying women of different tribes was to establish the relation f brotherhood with other tribes and this helped a lot in the propagation of Islam and benefited the Muslims and a lot
