f:979 -    The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is the first Prophet.  Is this a Hadith

Question:     Many scholars often say that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has been a Prophet even when Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) was between body and soul.  I want to know the reference of this Hadith.

Answer:     This Hadith is present in Jame’ Tirmidhi, Abwab Ul Manaqib, Vol. 2, Pg. No. 202:

Translation of Hadith: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah that the Sahabah asked the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam):  O Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)!  When did Prophethood become compulsory for you?  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  I have been a Prophet even when Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) was between body and soul, which is that the connection between the body and soul had not yet been made.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has been a Prophet since then.  Here the intent is to show that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was the first of all Prophets.  (Jame’ Tirmidhi, Abwab Ul Manaqib, Vol. 2, Pg. No. 202, Hadith No. 3968; Musnad Imam Ahmed, Hadith No. 17075; Mustadrak Alas Sahihain, Hadith No. 4174).

It is given in the explanatory notes of the Hadith:

Translation:  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is the Prophet who has the honor of being the first.  The rules of His Prophethood came into effect from that world itself.  On the other hand, the rules of the other Prophets came into effect after their being sent into this world, as Hadhrat Jami has described that even before gracing the world with His physical body, He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was a Prophet.
