f:942 -    What if one cries out in pain while offering Salaat

Question:     If I am offering Salaat behind and Imam and because of pain, an Oh! escapes my lips, is my Salaat rendered invalid?

Answer:     Salaat is an absolute worship of Almighty Allah.  Apart from recitation of the Holy Quran and other recitations of the Salaat, talking is not at all allowed.  There is Hadith mentioned in Sunan Nasai:

Translation: Nothing from the talk of people is permissible in our Salaat.  This is nothing but glorification of Allah and recitation of the Holy Quran.  (Sunan Nasai, Hadith No. 1226)

In light of this, whether Salaat is being offered with congregation, singly, any talk, intentionally or unintentionally, with a valid reason or without a valid reason renders the Salaat invalid.

Thus, if unintentionally, an “Oh!” escapes from one’s lips while offering Salaat, the Salaat is rendered invalid.  However, if any sound escapes from the lips of an ill person because of pain/agony, then the Salaat is not rendered invalid the way the sound made by a sneeze, cough, belch and yawn doesn’t invalidate the Salaat.  Also, if somebody cries inaudibly in pain or even cries audibly in a manner that the sound isn’t articulated, then the Salaat is not invalid.
