f:900 -    Reciting the same Surah more than once in the same unit of Salaat

Question:     I have heard the reciting the same Surah (a chapter of the Holy Quran) more than once in a single Raka?at is not correct whereas I have read about some Nafl Salaat that we should recite Surah Ikhlaas thrice in each Raka?at.  In some Salaat, we have to recite some other Surah three or five times.  What is the correct ruling?

Answer:     The Fuqaha (jurists) have clarified in detail about reciting the same Surah more than once in the same Raka’at (unit of Salaat).

It is Makruh Tanzeehi (Undesirable) to repeat the same Surah twice or thrice in the same Raka’at.  This does not invalidate the Salaat as such, but is valid with some degree of undesirability.  This ruling is about Fardh (obligatory) Salaat.  In Nafl (optional) Salaat, it is permissible to recite the same Surah more than once without any reservations.

As per the clarifications of the Fuqaha, there is no problem in reciting the same Surah 3 or 5 times, as you have asked.

As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 107:

Translation:  It is Makruh to recite the same Surah more than once in Fardh Salaat and there is no problem in repeating a single Surah in Nafl Salaat.
