f:882 -    Eating by mistake in fast
Country : Secunderabad,
Name : Muhammad Afsar
Question:     I started my fast of Ramadhan.  At noon, by mistake I ate something like we do in other days.  Do I have to make up the fast (qaza) or should I give expiation (Kaffara) also?
............................................................................
Answer:     If any person eats something by mistake in a fast, then the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has said about such a person that he/she should complete the fast.  As given in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 1933:

Translation: If a person eats or drinks something by mistake in a fast, then he (or she) should complete the fast, because Allah Most High has fed that person.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 1933)

Thus, the fast does not break on having something by mistake.  As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol.  1, Pg. No 202 and Pg No. 206.

Thus, your fast is not invalidated on having something by mistake provided you did not eat or drink anything until Iftaar and did not do anything which invalidates your fast.  If you thought that your fast is invalidated and started eating and drinking, then there is no expiation (Kaffara) on you, but you have to make up your fast.

And Allah Most High knows best.
