f:853 -    Postpartum bleeding - Should wait 21 days before bathing?
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Yousuf Khan
Question:     Asak, i have a question, kindly answer: 1)my wife had a miscarriage of four months and her nifaas got cleaned in 15 days so can she take bath after 15 days or as per our elders say  she has to wait for 21 days to take bath, thanks

Answer:     Postpartum blood is regarded by the Shariah as Major Uncleanliness.  There is no minimum time limit for postpartum bleeding to stop and the maximum limit is 40 days.

It is compulsory to bathe after this and it should not be delayed.  If bathing is delayed so much that the time of a Salaat is about to end, then bathing immediately is Obligatory (Fardh).  The belief especially in women who are having postpartum bleeding that it is compulsory to wait 40 days (or whatever is the culture and custom of that particular area) before bathing and until then they cannot offer Salaat is totally wrong.  The moment postpartum bleeding ends, they should bathe and start offering Salaat.

And Allah Most High knows best.
