Question:     Nowadays, women address their husbands by their names.  They pride themselves on this.  Does the Shariah permit this?

Answer:     Islam teaches etiquette, culture and refinement.  It teaches us the manners in which the younger should address the older ones and has given guidelines for all. Thus, a wife addressing a husband by her name is Makruh (undesirable) in light of the Shariah.  The wife should address the husband with words befitting the dignity of the husband.  As given in Durre Mukhtaar, Vol. 5, Pg. No. 297.
