f:783 -    Closing eyes while offering Salaat
Country : Karnataka, India,
Name : Imtiyaz Ur Rahman
Question:     Some people close their eyes while offering Salaat.  What is the correct method, should eyes be open or closed?
............................................................................
Answer:     It is Undesirable (Makruh Tanzeehi) to close eyes while offering Salaat.  If it is done for concentration and absorption in Salaat, then there is no undesirability.  Salaat is such a complete form of worship that every part and organ of the body is busied in worship.  In the same way, the eyes are also busy in worship.  It is the etiquette of Salaat that while in Qiyam i.e. standing, our gaze should be where we perform Sajdah, in the Ruku, on the backs of the feet, in Sajdah, on our nose, when sitting (In Qaida) in our lap, when ending the Salaat, on the right and left shoulder respectively.  If the eyes are closed, then the aforementioned etiquette will not be followed.  As given in Bada'i Us Sana'i, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 507.

Here, we should remember that there is no problem in doing anything, which helps the person offering the Salaat increase his/her concentration and absorption and those acts, which are not for improving the Salaat are undesirable (Makruh).  As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 105 and in Durre Mukhtaar, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 476/477.
