Question: Can a scholar offer Salaat behind an Imam who is not a scholar? ............................................................................
Answer: To become an Imam, knowing the basic and necessary rules is compulsory. Being an A'alim is not a condition. However, an A'alim is more worthy of being the Imam than somebody who simply knows the basic rules. Thus, the Salaat of a scholar behind somebody who is not a scholar, but knows the necessary rules, is valid. As Imam Kasani (May Allah Most High shower His mercy on him) writes in Bada'i Us Sana'i, Kitab Us Salaat. And Allah knows best.
