f:753 -    Reciting the Holy Quran when unclean

Question:     Can a person who needs to take a bath recite the Holy Quran after washing the hands and the private parts?  What about Du'a and other Dhikr?

Answer:     As per the Shariah, any person who is in a state of uncleanliness (who needs to take a bath after intercourse, nocturnal emission or the like) cannot recite the Holy Quran as given in this Hadith of Jame' Tirmidhi:

Hadhrat 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) narrates that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  A woman in her menses and one who is unclean should not recite the Holy Quran.

However, there is no prohibition on reciting Du'a and other forms of Dhikr when unclean.  As given in Sharh Wiqaya, Vol. 1 Pg. No. 116:

There is no harm in reciting Du'a and other Dhikr.

It is given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 38, Kitab Ut Taharah:

For a woman in menses and someone who is unclean, reciting any Du'a, answering to the Adhaan and reciting such forms of Dhikr is permissible.

However, it is Commendable (Mustahab) for them to make ablution when reciting Du'a or the like.  It is given in Durre Mukhtaar, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 122:

For someone who is unclean and for a woman in her menses or who is having postpartum bleeding, there is no undesirability in seeing the Holy Quran as the uncleanliness does not extend to the inside of the eye.  Also reciting Du'a is not Strictly Undesirable (Makrh Tahrimi).  However, it is Commendable to make ablution for remembrance of Allah Most High.  Making remembrance of Allah Most High without ablution is against its etiquette and Undesirable (Makruh Tanzeehi).

Thus, when unclean, one cannot recite the Holy Quran even if one washes the hands and the private parts.  However, Du'a and other Dhikr can be done.
