f:744 -    Reciting the Holy Quran during menses
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Farhana
Question:     I am doing Hifz of the Holy Quran in a Madarsa.  I have seen some girls are reciting the Holy Quran even during their menses.  When I told them not to do it, they said that they have heard that they can recite the Holy Quran even during menses without touching the Holy Quran.  What does the Shariah say about this?
............................................................................
Answer:     The way the Shariah has declared offering Salaat and fasting as impermissible for women during menses, in the same way, it has declared touching the Holy Quran and/or reciting it as also impermissible, no matter whether the recitation of the Holy Quran is by seeing in the Holy Quran or only from memory.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has forbidden a woman in menses and someone who has to take a bath for Taharah from reciting the Holy Quran:

Translation: Hadhrat 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) narrates from the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) that He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  A woman in menses and an unclean person should not recite the Holy Quran.  (Jame' Tirmidhi, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 34)

The recitation of the girls constitutes a sin in the Shariah.  They should refrain from reciting the Holy Quran in their menses.  Thus, your stopping them from doing so is as per the commandment of the Shariah.  It is the responsibility of the mother and the teachers to instruct the girls about this and teach them the rules of the Shariah and the issues related to these matters.

As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 38.

And Allah Most High knows best.
