f:731 -    Using black hair dye in youth
Country : India,
Name : Irfana Begum
Question:     One of my friends who is pretty young has started having white hair in his head.  He wants to use black hair dye.  Does the Shariah allow this considering that he is young?
............................................................................
Answer:     Using black hair dye is grave sin, be it in youth or in old age.  The Hadith have strict warnings about this.  There is a Hadith in Sunan Abu Dawood:

Translation: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be well pleased with them) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  In the last times, there will be some people who will use black hair dye which will be like the chest of a pigeon.  They will not get even the fragrance of Jannah.  (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 4214)

There is a Hadith in Sahih Muslim:

Translation:  It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah be well pleased with him) that on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, Hadhrat Abu Quhafa (May Allah be well pleased with him) was brought before the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  His hair and beard were absolutely white.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Replace this whiteness with something else and refrain from using black hair dye.  (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 5631).

This Hadith very clearly mentions the prohibition of black hair dye.  In light of this, using black hair dye should be absolutely avoided.  Hair dye other than the black hair dye, like red or of the color of henna is permissible.  The Hadith clarify this:

Translation:  The best hair dye is of henna and “Neel”.  (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 4207)

It is given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Kitab Ul Karahiyya:

Translation:  It is nice to use a dye for the hair and the beard, but it should be done with leaves of henna, “Katam” or “Neel.”  However, for the Mujahideen (those who fight to ensure peace), black hair dye is permissible.  As given in Radd Ul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Kitabul Khatri Wal Ibaha.

And Allah knows best.
