f:728 -    Shouldering the bier during wife
Country : India,
Name : Kaleemuddin
Question:     Recently, in our family a person passed away. While carrying the dead body (Janazah), a person came up to me and said, "Your wife is pregnant. You should not shoulder the body."  Is there any command in the Shariah to this effect?
............................................................................
Answer:     There is no concept of bad omen in Islam. These are all pre-Islamic things and wishful thinking, which are strictly forbidden in Islam.  There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari Vol. 2:

Translation of Hadith: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him), that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ' …….there is nothing called bad omen.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 5753)

Shouldering a dead body is a virtuous act and is established by the Sunnah.  Glad tidings of reward have been given upon this act.  If the husband of a pregnant woman shoulders the dead body, it is surely a virtuous act.  Taking this as a bad omen is clearly wrong.  There is no such concept in Islam.  In the Shariah, many rewards of shouldering the bier and walking along with it have been mentioned.

There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari:

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him), that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Whoever joins a funeral Salaat, till he completes it, for him there is one 'Qiraat.'  Whoever remains till the burial, for him there are 2 'Qiraat.' Somebody asked: What is Qiraat?' The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) answered: It is equal to 2 mountains (of reward)  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 1325)

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
