f:726 -    Is the second Sajda of Surah Haj a Sajda Tilawah
Country : Hyderabad,
Name : Raheem
Question:     Can we perform the Sajdah of the 17th para of the Holy Quran?  I was reciting it and mentioned to my cousin that in this para, there are 2 Sajda.  He said that only one should be done.  Please guide me.

............................................................................
Answer:     Sajdah Tilawah i.e. prostration on reciting specific verses of the Holy Quran, is Compulsory (Wajib) on reciting 17 specific verses of the Holy Quran.  In the opinion of Imam Shafa’i (May Allah shower His mercy on him), there are 2 Sajda Tilawah in Surah Hajj.  With the jurists of the Hanafi school of Fiqh, the second Sajda is not Sajda Tilawah.  As given in Sharh Ma’ani Ul Aathaar, Kitab Us Salaat, Pg. No. 248/249:

Translation:  It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (May Allah be well pleased with them) that he said:  The first Sajdah in Surah Hajj is a command and the second one is as instruction.

The second Sajda of Surah Hajj, has been mentioned along with Ruku’.  In the verses of the Holy Quran wherein Sajdah and Ruku’ are mentioned, there the mention of Salaat is intended.  The prostration is one of Salaat and not of recitation of the Holy Quran, as given in Surah Al Imran, verse number 43:

Thus, on this verse, Sajda Tilawah is not performed.

As given in Bada’i Us Sana’i, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 451/452.

In light of the above, those who follow the Hanafi school of jurisprudence should not prostrate on this particular verse of Surah Hajj.  However, if someone is offering Salaat in the lead of a Shafa’i Imam, then they may prostrate along with the Imam (i.e. if the Imam does it).

And Allah Most High knows best.
