f:712 -    What to do if water in 1000 liter water tank is made unclean

Question:     In our house, a dog put its muzzle in a bucket of water.  We threw away the water, but before we could wash the bucket, kids put that bucket in a 1000 liter tank of water.  The whole bucket was immersed in it.  What will be the ruling of the water of the tank?  For now, we have emptied the water tank.

Answer:     A dog’s saliva is unclean.  If the dog touches a vessel with its muzzle, then the water of the vessel is rendered unclean and if this unclean water gets to be mixed with clean water, which is neither running water nor in a 10 x 10 enclosure, then even the pure water is made impure.

When the dog had put its muzzle in a bucket of water and the unclean water of that bucket had been mixed with the pure water of a water tank, then the pure water is also made impure and unclean.  It cannot be used for washing clothes, Wuzu, bath, etc.  There is no way to purify this water.  In this situation, the water tank should be cleaned, washed 3 times with pure water and emptied each time.  After washing it 3 times, the water tank will become clean.  Now water can be stored in it and used for all purposes.  The bucket also has to be cleaned in the same way.  As given in Al Hidayah, Kitab Ut Taharah.
