f:704 -    Is Muraqaba an Unislamic practice

Question:     The Sufi saints have instructed their students and disciples to perform Muraqaba to gain the Qurb of Allah Ta?ala.  Nowadays, some people say that this is an Unislamic practice.  Please guide us.

Answer:     Muraqaba means that the person be conscious of the fact that Almighty Allah is seeing him.  Allah Most High says:

Allah is indeed Ever-Watchful over you.  Surah Nisa (4:1)

There are many similar verses of the Holy Quran, which say that Allah Most High is watching over us.  This practice has been drawn from the Holy Quran and the Hadith.  It is mentioned in the famous Hadith Jibraeel that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said about Ihsaan:

Translation:  Ihsaan is that you worship Almighty Allah as if you are seeing Him.  If this is not possible for you, then maintain the thought that He is seeing you.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 50)

Muraqaba is nothing but to “maintain the thought that He is seeing you”.

And Allah Most High knows best.
