f:70 -    Why is there a pulpit in the mosque
Country : India,
Name : Muhammad Hameedullah
Question:     Asslamalaikum Mufti Sahab, please tell me why there is a Mimbar (pulpit) in every Masjid and I have seen a long stick on which the Imam keeps the book and recites the Khutba of Friday .

............................................................................
Answer:     Walaikum as Salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakutuhu.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) used to lean on the trunk of a date tree and give the Khutba.  When the number of the Companions increased, they requested the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), as given in Tabqatul Kubra written by the Muhaddith (Hadith-Expert) of the 2nd and 3rd century Hijri, in which a very lengthy Hadith is mentioned.  Note a part of that Hadith.

Translation:  The Companions entreated:  O Prophet of Allah SWT (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), surely the number of Muslims have increased.  How nice it would be if You would use something, that when You stand on it, the people have the honor of seeing it.  In another Hadith, the following words are mentioned:

A Companion asked the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam):  O Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), is it possible that I construct a pulpit for you, on which You stand on Friday and address the people and Muslims have the honor of seeing You and You give Your blessed sermon?  The Holy Prophet assented and said: Yes. (Tabaqatul Kubra, Vol 1). Apart from this in some Hadith, a woman is mentioned and in some Hadith, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wa sallam) Himself ordered that a pulpit be built.

Imam Badruddin ‘Aini (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) has written in Umdatul Qari, Kitab Us Salaat:

Translation:  It is Commendable (Mustahab) to construct a pulpit in the Masjid and to have an elevated place like a pulpit for the Khateeb (the person giving the Khutba).

It is given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol 1;

Translation:  It is a Sunnah (masnoon) for the Khateeb to be on the Mimbar in accordance with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

The above-mentioned Hadith show that it is a Sunnah (masnoon) and Commendable (Mustahab) to construct a Mimbar in the Masjid.  Due to this the listeners pay attention to the Khateeb and the Khateeb can see the audience as well.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
