f:694 -    Mixing up verses of the Holy Quran in Salaat
Country : Benares, India,
Name : submittername
Question:     In Salaat Ul Maghrib, the Imam started Surah Asr, but while ending the Surah, recited a verse of Surah Teen by mistake.  After the Salaat, some people demanded that the Salaat be repeated, but the Imam and some other people said that Salaat is valid.  Please tell what is correct?

Answer:     If any person recites the verse/s of another Surah by mistake in the middle of one Surah, then the Fuqaha (Islamic Law Experts) have clarified the possible situations.  If the person completed a verse (or stopped at the proper place) and then recited the verse of another Surah, then the Salaat is valid.  If the person did not stop at the proper place and recited the verse of another Surah in such a way that the meaning is not changed, even then Salaat is valid, but if somebody mixes up the verses of the Holy Quran in such a way that the meaning changes, then Salaat is invalidated (Fasid)

As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg No. 80:

Translation: If another verse is recited in such a way that the proper "Waqf" is performed (i.e. the reciter has stopped at the proper place) and then another verse is started, then the Salaat will not be invalidated (Fasid); if proper Waqf is not performed and then the verse is recited in such a way that the meaning is not changed, even then Salaat is not invalidated.  If in mixing up the verses, the meaning is changed, then the Salaat is invalidated.

In the given situation, when the Imam recited the verse of Surah 'Asr :

"Al Ladheena aamanu wa 'amilus Salihati wa ta wa sau bil haqqi wa ta wa sau bis Sabr ."

And then the verse of Surah Teen:

Al Ladheena aamanu wa amilus salihati falahum ajrun gairu mamnoon."

Since, in both these verses of Surah 'Asr and Surah Teen, the qualities of the pious worshippers of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) is mentioned, the meaning has not changed and thus, the Salaat is not invalidated.  What the Imam and the others have said that the Salaat is not invalidated is correct.
