f:678 -    What to do if Masjid is far from house

Question:     If we live in foreign countries like US, UK, etc., there the Masjid are very far.  Can we offer Salaat in our houses?  Also, what should we do to save ourselves from sins happening around in those countries?

Answer:     Among the valid reasons described by the Fuqaha (jurists) in light of the Hadith, the Masjid being very far is not mentioned.  If Masjid is far in some area, then the person whose house is the most distant from the Masjid will get the most reward in coming to the Masjid.  

There is a Hadith in Jame’ Tirmidhi, Vol. 1:

Translation of Hadith: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Shall I not inform you of those deeds with whom Allah Ta’ala wipes out the sins and raises the stations?  The Sahabah said:  Why not?  O Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Performing a perfect Wuzu in spite of difficulty, taking more steps towards the Masjid, waiting for the next Salaat after the Salaat, as these are the sanctuaries of safety.

Even if the Masjid is far from the house, one should go to the Masjid and offer Salaat.  If somebody’s house is far from the Masjid, they will have to take that many more steps towards the Masjid and consequently they will get more reward.

To save yourselves from sins, acquire Islamic knowledge in your leisure time, read the Holy Quran and recite Durood as much as possible.
