f:670 -    Praying for death

Question:     There are many people in the society who face difficulties.  Out of desperation, some people say:  O Allah!  Why don?t you give me death?  Can this kind of prayer be made?

Answer:     Desiring death out of desperation in the face of difficulties and praying for one's death is Abhorrent (Makruh Tahrimi).  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has prohibited desiring death.  There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari:

Translation:  It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas bin Malik (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: No one among you should desire death because of any difficulty  If that person does desire death, then he should recite the following prayer:

Transliteration: Allahumma Ahyinee Ma Kaanatil Hayatu Khairan Lee, wa tawaffanee Idha Kaanatil Wafatu Khairan Lee. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 5347)

If sins become too great, turmoils start overwhelming and there is danger of falling into difficulties, then to save one's religion and to be relieved from turmoils, death can be desired.  As there is a Hadith in Jame' Tirmidhi:

Translation:  It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) :………..(in such a time) the inside of the earth will be better for you than its outside.  (Jame' Tirmidhi, Hadith No: 2435)

All in all, one should not desire death because of any worldly fear.
